Happy Hoof or Safe & Sound?

Sorry for all the lami questions, just desperate to get things right when Lottie comes home from horsepital.

I can't decide whether to give her Happy Hoof or Safe and Sound? Have spoken to both Spillers and D&H helplines and both feeds sound suitable for her but not sure how to decide between the 2 of them? She would also be having about half a small scoop of Kwik-Beet.

She is a fussy feeder so perhaps I should go with the one that is most palatable?
 
There's also Dengie Healthy Hoof which is like the Happy Hoof but has increased levels of biotin in it... It is extremely palatable, is laminitis trust approved, and you could also add some alfa beat to it which again is laminitis trust approved.

My old boy is a fussy eater and although I buy him HH he does not like it so my TB (good doer!!) loves it (but my old boy has a tiny wee bit to mix all his potions up every night) ... my friend uses S&S (not personally but her horses eat it!) and I think that looks tastier

) ... so perhaps she may like this instead? ... it's Laminitis Trust Approved too!
 
Some feed companies send out small free samples to try - have you asked whether you can have samples of HH and S&S? Alternatively, have you got any friends who feed either of the products so you can try them out on her before you buy a whole bag?

Personally, I have only used Happy Hoof in the past and pony loved it, although she did turn her nose up at Hi Fi Lite.
 
Happy Hoof also comes with nuts in it....

I think it is personal preference. My Horse was on Happy Hoof and loved it, I moved to Safe and Sound and he hates it so we are back to Happy Hoof again. We also tried Good Doer and HI Fi Lite which he did not like. He obviously has Dengie issues LOL
 
Mine were on Happy Hoof, and ate it happily. We then switched to safe and sound and they love eating it even more. Most of our yard are now on S&S - I think it smells and looks more palatable than happy hoof, but to be honest they're much the same.
 
Ah yes, I saw that advertised in a magazine recently. She has Formula4Feet so she should be ok on the biotin front.

No one on the yard feeds any of them so can't try any that way but will call the feed companies now to ask for samples. Lottie is not due home until the end of the week so hopefully if they post them quickly I could try them on her before she comes home and I need to buy a whole bag.

Lucky pony is only on Hi-Fi lite and bran at the vets.... yummy!
 
Either will suit your pony just fine, I prefer safe and sound as it's much more interesting than happy hoof but as I say, just personal preference. My horse gobbled both up quite happily
 
I prefer Healthy Hoof to Happy Hoof as the vit/min is sprayed on rather than in a nuget and so each scoop has the same concentrations of vit/min (rather than the nuts sinking to the bottom of the bag!). Mine love it (but then they loved Happy Hoof too - not keen on Hi Fi though!)
 
Playing devil's advocate here, sorry. Just to say we feed Top Spec Anti Lam which is safe for laminitics, contains all the levels of vits and mins a horse needs and includes biotin.
 
My fussy TB loves Happy Hoof. It's about the only thing she'll consistently eat with gusto summer or winter.
 
Depends if Lottie is sensitive to alfalfa. Happy Hoof contains it, but Safe & Sound doesn't.

Even though the Laminitis Trust recommends feeding alfalfa to laminitics, some laminitics can be overly sensitive to the stuff. My mare, Maisie had a bad bout of laminitis a year ago, I got her slimmed down (she was on the porky side) and managed to stabilise the lami, though she continued to be footy. I read a scientific paper on the alfalfa theory, so eliminated it from her diet and she improved within days.

I would suggest that if Lottie carries on being footy for a while, you try the elimination diet. Maisie is now fed just hay and unmolassed beet with a vit & min supplement. Be aware that a lot of feed balancers and supplements also contain alfalfa, you need to read the label.

I feed Maisie a vit & min supplement containing YeaSacc which helps to support the gut flora - very important to laminitics. I currently use Dengie Leisure Vits & Mins which is well balanced and doesn't contain alfalfa.
