I jumped my boy over a small grid today. Just 3 fences, a bounce and then 1 stride to annother fence. Started them off small and he flew through it...way too fast! So i got off and put them up so he actually had to think about it! Well he was REALLY good flew them all but still fast! I was really concentrating on sitting up after the fences but im scared i will jab him in the teeth as my hands arnt the best (something im trying to work on)

I didnt want to do too much today because of the heat, but has anyone got anything else i could try to slow him down??

Doesnt help as he isnt fast going to the jumps he just likes to speed off on landing but obviously in a grid this isnt desireable. I have tried poles on landing too but he just manages to step on them all and scare himself. He listens to me perfectly in a loose ring french link on hacks alone or in groups and schooling over poles and poles between wings, its just when the jumps go up over about 2ft that he speeds at, i can bring him back within a few strides but i always feel like its too much with my hands (probably just me being paranoid). I guess i just need to practice more.

I know its never a quick fix and i dont want it to be really, just want to find some exercises i could try with him as we have no chance in completing a course at that speed!!

has anyone watched you? just that you might feel you are going fast but in fact you just going at a good SJ pace? some horses "feel" faster than they are actually going!

That's true.

To be honest I'm not much of a jumper so could be talking absolute rubbish, but in my limited experience, horses tend to come out of a jump a bit quicker than they went in. I'm mainly thinking of the fact that whenever I approach at a trot, they always canter away - for a few strides at least.

What's he like over a single fence? Could it be that the 'pressure' of a grid is making him want to get it over as quickly as possible?

No hes just the same over a single fence he always clears them so seems to have enough impulsion and is sitting on his hocks enough just quicker than i would like him to be...especially for corners, but i am also not much of jumper, giving it go because he seems to love it.

My intructor is a dressage instructor so not much help on the jumping there, im loathe to get someone else though because my instructer is great.

Its all so complicated
