Hey everyone,

Just looking some advice my labrador Paddy has the above and its becoming a pain fo him obviously and us cleaning up the blood ha. At first it wasnt too bad as he had hair there to protect it but due to the abuse he gives his tail it is now bald at the tip.

On the advice of the vet we have tried vaseline but he just licks it off, we have tried bandaging etc which last a while till falls off or chewed off by him or my other dog.

Any other suggestions would obviously like to avoid docking if at all we can, a tail less labrador is just wrong ha.

Here is a picture of him so you can see how handsome he is

Sometimes it's easier to take the tip off if really damaged and it keeps opening and usually u can just say take enough off to stop them chewing at it when it recovers (as it's now) ust out of gobs reach:D
We take the majority of the lurchers tips off when they come into rescue, even taking the tips get u to a littler thicker part thats less likely to split again.

A friend has previously said about sticking an empty syringe on the end to protect it while it heals up, can't remember what she said about fastening it though, may have been lots of vetwrap and just harder to chew off.

The syringe casing is pretty routine when bandaging tail tip inurys, but he would still beable to chew it off if he is not wearing an elizabethan collar around his head. But indeed syringe cases are the way to go when bandaging, even just the syringe case means he cannot bang if it off walls, but he could still reach and chew it.

Matty dog had this problem, God Bless her. I used to put a sticking plaster on it. It stayed on long enough for the end to heal and gave it some protection. Many are the times we came home to find the hall looking as if a mass murder had taken place. Amazing how far blood can splatter!!

We used to tape on a syringe onto the end of our red setter whch used to do the trick. I remember the hall being splattered with blood!!

Thanks for that will give it a try! Yeah when we first noticed the blood thought him and our other dog had been fighting whilst we are out but they didnt have a scratch on them took us about a week of thinking and googling to work out it was his tail x
