Advice needed, I am very bad with spotting lameness etc. Just not good a the physiology. I have a new horse on loan/rehome. She is an expolo pony so have heavy millage. She has a hard bony lump on the front of her front leg, above the joint kind of shin area. There is a corresponding white mark, ie the hair. I presume this is an injury from the mallet in the past. She is pretty sound but have noticed when really trotting forward/extending her head bobs, so technically not sound. Are the two linked? I think the lump is basicly a spavin and thought these don't normally cause lameness??? There is no obvious other causes like heat/swelling etc. Ideas??????

It sounds like a splint, spavin is in the hock, which should give no trouble once formed unless it is interfering with a joint or ligament, if she is nodding her head in trot she is not sound, it could be anything that is causing the lameness only a vet will be able to give you a diagnosis, as you are inexperienced with such issues it would be best to speak to the owner about getting her checked out before you commit to taking her on fully so you can at least make an informed decision.

Thanks, I did mean splint, not that much of a numpty! I have messaged the owner who said she was always sound and not aware of injury in the past. Although they did not have her whilst playing. Have not had my own horse for years as last one cost a lot in vets fees as he did suspensory, had bone spavins in hocks and was prone to absesses in front feet. Was hoping to not get another lemon! I think I will monitor for a few days and also see if being in overnight one night has an effect.
