hard feed

Why is it people think we *must* feed our horses these great big mixes of random feeds. :confused:
One of the liveries saw me feeding Roo tonight, she has a small meal (about half a scoop) of happy hoof (I started feeding her just for her supplement, but now I feed a little more happy hoof as I want back shoes off this winter)
The livery said "oh I couldnt do that, thats such a small feed, I'd feel mean"
Roo doesnt NEED a feed, she isnt underweight, its a waste of money to give her a big feed like the other liveries do. And if I asked why, there answer would be "coz Id feel mean" :confused:
 
Glad it isnt just me then, Roo has never had feed this time of year, she would get a feed in December/Jan/Feb time as she'd start losing weight in the really bad conditions
But shes older and stiffer so I now feed enough for her joint supplement which seems to work :)
 
I've just changed both of mine onto Allen and Page fast fibre - you'd be astonished if you saw me feeding that - it looks like a cow pat in a bucket. Looks and smells vile!
 
I get the same kind of words - "is that all she gets, mine gets........." It does my head in sometimes but I just ignore

My girl is a lovely weight, fit and has a lovely shiney coat.
 
Glad it's not just me...mine only gets a little something to get his supplements into him too! Although he is much keener to eat it these past few weeks - still living out and plenty of grass around but I suspect the nutritional value of the grass has dropped off a bit!

My friend feeds that to her horses and it does look vile but the horses love it.
 
Mine never get any hard feed - no cereals and no molasses of any sort :)

In the winter they get unmolassed chaff - one gets a 'light' version due to previous lami the other gets alfalfa for ulcers - with a small scoop of Fast Fibre - they love it and it has linseed in it amongst other good things and adlib hay :)

Both keep their weight and energy levels and look fantastic :)
 
My TB 23 y.o. gelding has a small feed of Soft Soak only so I can get some MSM, minerals, 100g linseed, vit E and Devils Claw into him but the majority of his diet is lots of ad lib very late cut haylage. He's been on a similar diet for the last ten years even when he was in work. He looks a picture of health with a very shiny coat and always has had.
 
my mare has half a scoop of good doer chaff and mug sized portion of triple crown evenkeel thats plenty for her though loads of hay at night as just brought her in as grass has gone in summer field now
