Hard Lump on hind leg just below hock on outside??

A very hard lump has formed overnight directly under the hock on the outside which has me somewhat perplexed. It feels like a splint but seems too high up to be a splint. I gave it a good prod and its not sensitive to touch with no heat. No sign of a kick either with no broken skin. Very slightly off on that hind leg, about 2/10ths but not nearly significant enough to be worried. Surely a newly formed splint would be painful to touch, causing significant lameness?? Just thought I'd check if anyone has experienced the same thing as its in such an unusual place and I'm truly out of ideas.....

I have booked a vet to come over to assess and x-ray and will cold-hose until then. Just dying to know what this could be in the meantime!

I had a horse throw one up exactly there, cold, felt bony. My vet said it was an extosis and didn't even want to xray, but this was back in the old days when if a horse wasn't lame it wasn't investigated.

you are right! vet couldn't believe how high up it was on the splint bone. just so relieved it was so obvious on the x-ray.
I've had a pony with splints in that position on both legs. They never troubled him and once settled down never got noticed in the show ring. Judges rarely run hands down back legs ?

Good to hear. 4 weeks box rest then will see what he's like. Vet concerned that it might interfere with the suspensory so your experience gives me hope it will all be fine! How much time did you give him off and was he lame at all when they were active?

He wasn't lame at all. He was only 3 and I think got them galloping in the hard field in a dry summer . I didn't know at the time they got splints on hind legs. I didn't do anything for them just left him turned out and didn't give any problems when he started being ridden later in the year
