Some advice needed for my friends horse.....

He was kicked in the field 2 weeks ago, when she got him in he had a hoof mark on his thigh and just below a little nick on the outside of the hock. The kick was quite swollen and the outside of the hock but it was a hard swelling instantly almost like a splint. He has never been lame on this and there has never been any heat. It has been cold hosed twice a day and cooling gel applied.

The thigh swelling had now gone but the hard lump on the hock is still there, it is on the outside and you cant see unless you really study from behind it is the right shape just comes out slightly more then teh other one but again has never had any heat and has continued to work fine and be turned out with no lameness at all.

Do you think this could be splint like?? thx!!

Have also placed in vet area (and stable yard by mistake!!

No he definitely isnt lame or sore when she squeezes it which is why she is still working him and just cold hosing

if he's not lame I wouldn't worry - It is probably a bruise on the bone which will go down slowly over a period of time. There might be a small perminant lump left tho.

my horse knocked himself out by headbutting the stable wall when I gave him his tea once (idiot!). He had a huge hard lump over one eye which took about 6 months to go away.

But if you are really worried you can always get the vet out.

My horse has exactly this - was kicked last year by my other horse and now has a hard lump just at top of his leg but below the hock. Its going down all the time and 13 months later it is half the size that it was. I have just left it and done nothing and he has been fine. It is solid and bony as described and at the time I was furious with thug horse who did it to my precious horse!
