So this morning went up to the farm to bring Ben in and noticed about 5 very large hard lumps along his back, neck and flank. They are about an inch in length. They are not sore to touch they just feel very hard. It isn't an allergic reaction to the fly spray because I've always used the same one and never saw this before. An asked my YO and he seems to think it's wasp stings, but five stings overnight seems hard to believe because when I turned him out last night there wasn't a mark on him ! Just wondering do any of you guys know what they could be ?? I'm a bit confused really.

P.S any solutions of getting rid of them ?

Thank you
Olivia

Maybe horsefly bites but i'm just wondering how they are only coming on now and the amount of horseflys that have been around us when we hack and when he is out in the field

I'm not exactly sure, but I have often attributed those hard lumps that pop up periodically on some horses at this time of year to horse flies. I have super sensitive skin and react to horse fly bites, but it's not a consistent reaction - sometimes I will have no reaction to speak of and other times I will come out in a hard lump within a couple of minutes, but they never itch or hurt when pressed, unlike midge or mossie bites

Thank you for your replies. So the only thing I can do is put fly spray on and hope for the best. Is there anything I can put on them to make them go down because they are huge !

I give mine a few anti histamine tables in an apple! you need about 4 as they are just the human ones so 1 wouldn't be strong enough! but both of mine have reacted like that to fly bites over the last few years! the boy had one of his chest about a month ago and it did take a couple of weeks to go down completely!
