Hi,
Regards my last post hard lumps on horses back, i have now been reliabley informed by the vet that it is a condtion called collagen necrosis [it sound worse than it is]. I would be interested to know if any one else has had to deal with this problem and what the outcome was. I have been given a tube of some kind of steriodal cream to treat the condition. Vet informed it is a cosmtic problem carry on riding and only seek his advice if the lumps start to get really big or bleed.

My horse had these when I bought him. Vet said to leave alone ( you can have steroid injections into the lumps) and use Nuumed half or full wool saddle cloth. You need to check saddle fits as this can cause them and that saddle cloth is clean. They have gone down over 2 years I've had him so you cant see them but can still feel them. For some reason twice a year when his coat changes they loose the hair on them but then it grows back bay within a few weeks. Never had any problems with them otherwise.

Hi Moggy

Ditto.

When I had my horse vetted I was told they should not cause a problem. However at this time of year (happened exact same time last year) the lumps on the righthand side of his back under the back of the saddle always seem to loose the hair and this does cause them to rub and look quite sore. I think it is related to time of year as coat is changing and it may be that because he is ridden much less, the skin becomes softer and more prone to rubbing.

Had the vet out last year who said there was little that could be done as injections or cutting them out often doesn't work. Suggested we use surgical spirits on the lumps to try and harden the skin and we should be fine riding him. I also got his saddle checked and changed this time last year, but obviously even a new saddle has done exactly the same a year later.

Trouble is I feel guilty riding him when they rub, I tried to leave him last year without riding for 2/3 weeks, but as soon as I rode again they rubbed. It would mean from end Dec to March /April I would never be able to ride !. Once his new coat comes through they seem to settle down.

Hi Mungali
Glad someone else has the same thing. Mine never gets sore though, hair just seems to come out. Have you tried a half wool nuumed? They arent cheap but last for ages and do seem to help.
