Hi, I was just looking for advice really or if anyone else has experienced horses with a similar swelling.

I brought him in from the field and noticed quite a large swelling on the inside of his near fore around the lower fetlock area. He walked sound but trotted lame slightly and there was a little heat so I rested it and cold hosed it for a couple of days. But that was two weeks ago and the swelling is still there and it's really quite hard and doesn't feel like it has any fluid in it. It now doesn't bother him at all he's completely sound and can be touched and put weight in with no discomfort. There's no heat and no sign of wounds. What worries me is that it's still there with no reduction in size really and that it's really quite solid! I thought perhaps windgalls but given it's quite low down and hard not soft and quite large I have dismissed it but open to any advice or suggestions!

Thanks in advance

I had a cob mare who developed an unexplained painless lump at the front of her forelock some years ago now. It just appeared, she wasn't lame, it wasn't hot, it was rock hard and she didn't seem bothered by it in the slightest. I called the vet in a panic who came out and was as mystified as me. His best guess was a questioning "Global warming?" (just as well I have a sense of humour) Didn't have a clue and as she wasn't in any pain or impeded at all, told me to watch and see. It took a good few weeks but one day I noticed that it seemed smaller and gradually it disappeared, never to return. Odd one though. I cut off her feathers and took a photo at the time.... odd, eh?

Yes this just appeared one day and just hadn't gone down since! Well if it's anything like your mares lump I'm hoping it will just go away of its own accord. Mine was lame to start with though which makes me a little uneasy as I think there must've been some damage somewhere. And his is on and around his joint at the back rather than on the front like yours! I just hope it's nothing serious!
