....that you can buy a registered native pony foal for under £50 but a pedigree dog averages at £500. I just can't get my head around that.

Ive heard of people paying up to £1000 for a dog! An old friend paid £200 for a cat! It was one of those fancy breeds, sorry my knowledge of cat breeds isnt good so not sure what it is.

Mae was my most expensive horse at £1400, got her as a broken 3 year old, rides and drives, came from travellers. End of the day i feel its money well spent, what shes given me in confidence over the year i could never repay her!

it's madness, but until people stop breeding crap you will always get sub-standard foals being sold for pocket money.

But these natives are not crap or substandard and infact the Exmoor Pony is on the endangered list yet a foal is worth £50.

I paid a lot more than £50 for my native pony. She's definitely not crap and is worth every penny (and more) that I paid for her.

I often think when I'm down there I'd love to bring a couple back but can you imagine them on our rich (county as a whole, even ours would be too good for them!) grazing, they'd be a laminitic nightmare waiting to happen?!

these native foals going through sales rings at that price arnt the pedigree show stock that breeders breed they are feral or semi feral ponies that live wild on hill and moor where ever they come from be it dartmoor or exmoor ect and they are not quality stock yes you may find a good one now and again but just cause they have papers to say they are pure bred dosent make them worth what show stock or proper breeders stock is worth ,these foals are rounded up every year and sold to keep the numbers correct on the moor to give them the best chance of survial and not in breeding ect hope i have explained this ok

Thankyou for pointing that out Calon. The same applies to the Dartmoor Hill Ponies. They have only recently been named dartmoor Hill Ponies because of the confusion where everybody thought the Heinz 57 ponies off the moors were dartmoors. Registered pure bred dartmoors raise more money as they are not sold at these sales anymore.

you only have to look at the commercial ring at hay - on wye to see the sub standard, comformationally incorrect animals that go through there, it is a good job the meatman gets them as they wouldn't make it as sound riding ponies......
the better bred, well presented animals go for a heck of alot more than £50.....
