Just wondering if anyone has a method of toughening up a scar?

Horse had a disagreement with a post and rail fence last year and (long story short) the wound is just finishing healing.

The scar skin is quite thin and easily damaged - it's a sort of inverted Y on the inside of his RF cannon bone, about 4" top to bottom, 3" left to right and about 1/2" at the junction of the Y

The trouble is, he has no nerve endings in the scar tissue so can't tell if he's doing something stupid to it (like scratching it with his teeth)

Is there anything I can put on to toughen it up?

I've heard of people using Cornucrescine is supposed to be good at getting the fur to grow back? Not sure about thickening scar tissue though..

Thanks for the thought - I've heard of using it for hair regrowth.

I can post some photos if anyone is interested (warning the wound is a bit gory! But the healed one looks brilliant in comparison! )

Get some Resolve Salve.

Bottom of this page shows very similar injuries.
I used the salve on the colt with the side injury and could not believe how fast it healed once I started using it. Simple to apply and forms a sort of seal.
My vet has used it on several slow healing wounds and it stops proud flesh forming and gets rid of it if it has formed.

thanks shadeyoak - it would've been better again if he hadne't attacked it but that's horses for you. It's looking a bit scruffy round the edges as it's completed slathered with fly repellent gel - to try and keep the midges off it.

Thanks zoon - he's got a small scab in the middle of it - not sure if you can see it in the photos - just in the junction of the Y. If I put surigical spirit everywhere other than the scab, would that be ok?

thanks dryrot - do you mean to bathe his wound? Or stand him in it? I'd have to wait for the scab to go otherwise it might just sting a little!

Just bathe it. Yes, it will probably sting a bit. You could try a mild solution at first and gradually increase the strength. It was a vet who told me that and it does work! I don't think they like to advise something so cheap and easy as they can hardly send a bill, but this vet was a personal friend.;)

Another thing you could try is honey.

Both are old well tried remedies and certainly won't do any harm.
