Hardwood or Recycled Plastic........

for internal stables??

I'm really not sure

Hardwood- looks nice, but needs cleaning/oiling every year. Bad for the environment.

Recycled Plastic- also looks nice, but i've heard only for first few years?? (anyone know?) Virtually maintanence free. Much better for the environment.

So the question, which is better, also from a livery clients' perspective??

I haven't had any experience with the recycled plastic as stabling, I presume it would be easy to clean and virtually maintenance free, but I would want reassurance that it wouldn't splinter if kicked and would want to actually see some that had been in use for a couple of years.

Now hardwood, yes it does need some maintenance, and horses can chew it, but, by God, it can take some punishment. I have a barnful of hardwood stalls (double thickness, inch and a half thick, laid vertically) that I know for a fact is at least 15 years old. Yes there are a few chew marks and tiny dents but the stuff is solid! It has broken three saw blades (those wicked round blades) and trashed a chainsaw when we cut the walls a foot or so lower.

Personally, I'd go for the hardwood unless the plastic really measured up to it.

I have to be a sheep with Enfys again here. Hardwood......ANY day of the week for me. I don't like the plastic; I love hardwood.

Hardwood - Donkey and her stable neighbour/buddy Murph love to banter, which includes the occaisional kick of the hardwood and they just rebound off it!! With plastic I too would be concerned it might shatter, wood is also warmer
