After my horse took a bad knock to her leg in the field (posted on the vet forum) I've decided to get some chaps or turnout socks for my two mares for all round. That's 4 pairs in all.

Equilibrium Stomatex Equi chaps have the plus of being breathable but I don't need them for mud fever so I'm not sure about the way they fit under the heel, plus they are expensive.

Equlibrium Hardy chaps are top of the list I think, but I wondered if anyone has tried them and can recommend them - or not. The horses would wear them for around 6-8 hours a day in winter and I could rinse and dry them daily at home.

(I have some SMB boots but don't want anything that supportive in the field)

I wanted to do my research since I need 4 pairs and it will be expensive (but not as expensive as my current vets bill).

the only thing I would watch with the boots is that they don't rub as I have found them to do so on one of my horses. If you are able to change them regularly though it shouldn't be too much of a problem - not sure what they are like for long periods in the field though. Its odd I've been looking for something similar too but the one's I've found have mostly been geared towards mud fever.

Hardy chaps aren't designed for mud fever but for field injury as they're not quite so close fitting around the fetlock. As long as you're careful to get the right size you shouldn't have a problem with rubbing or slipping. I don't need to used them personally with my two, but customers I've spoken too seem happy with them.

I have a pair for one of my TB mares and have had no problems, they dry really fast too, so if you do intend to wash them everytime you will be fine. My girl wears hers for around 8 hours a day.........
