Hi, I'm new to the forum, dedicated hunt follower and general countryside lover. :D

Question for those of you who hare course with your dogs - how exactly did you get involved in it? I have a young, slightly hyperactive field spaniel who we would love to course but I'm unsure how to get him started with it?

Any suggestions/advice appreciated!

hmmm, lots of people seem be unaware of it, even in England

Us country folk are like our JRT's...selective hearing, if we don't like it we may choose to ignore it....

Disclaimer: Joke!

Oh, I've been reading a lot of posts on this forum and I'm not exactly going to start paying attention to you.

I'm in Ireland - and I'm she. Does anyone actually have anything HELPFUL to say.

Hare coursing isnt an activity I'd use a spaniel for, a hare will make a spaniel look ridiculous in the field, I'd use the spaniel for what they are good at working cover and flushing rabbits and birds, if you still want advice on how to start your dog chasing hares, basically just take it to where there are hares and let it chase them, I doubt any coursing club would be prepared to allow you to course hares with your spaniel during a formal days coursing.............Carreg

You could get a lurcher as well and use the spaniel to quarter the field and flush the hares for the lurcher?
I should think the spaniel will soon learn he hasn't got a hope in hell of catching a hare and will not bother to chase them. My lurcher is the same with rabbits, she just sits and watches.

Sometimes the most obvious answer is the best. I would certainly locate an area in which here hare here!

Top of the morning to ya..

I didn't refer to you as either a he or a she.

I am actually hurt by that. Gutted and put it my place. I think I'll go and sit in darkened room and be sad for a while and think. :smirk:

Not meaning to be offensive, but are you for real?

I have an exceptionally good working lurcher, and even he isnt fast enough to catch a hare, and trust me he can really shift.

If you put him up against your spaniel it would be like comparing a ferrai to a mini.

Some of the bigger, mostly greyhound lurchers should be able to catch a hare, or a proper working greyhound.

Bear in mind that for many generations spaniels have been bred to retrieve, not kill.
