It had already interfered badly with the others at the previous fences - and goes on to reappear with them again after that clip!

The loose horse was having a great time causing trouble! That is just a short clip of 1 fence. He cut across them numerous times and then when you think he is safely out of the way on the inner track he appears again at the last running across it - thankfully after the first 2 were over and the 3rd one was so far behind the Jockey would have seen and avoided the horse easily.

The loose horse had a very jolly time. Having got rid of the jockey at the first he almost took out Harry at the second which is why Harry did that approaching the third so he had a clear approach to the fence.

Then you see him today after winning the Betfair Chase on Protektorat hanging off the horses mouth, I know jockeys like to celebrate a big win and so they should but I do cringe sometimes.

Whilst going across the finish line dropped his reins and stuck his arms out, I'm afraid he'd get a b.llocking if he did that on one of mine!

I guess it looks fun, I found some video from a month ago when he did the same. It looks like he's making it a trademark like Frankie's flying dismount.

It's fine until he falls off doing it...

It's fine, he keeps the race as he crossed the line with the horse he would just look like a twat. And the horse, 99% of the time would pull itself up with the others and be caught just like it would if it had lost its jockey at any other point of the race.

It's not the worst thing you can do. How many people nark and complain when a jockey stands bolt up right in their stirrups, reins in one hand and waves their Whip around? At least Skelton isn't hanging onto their mouths for balance.

For me, dropping the contact ,and possibly standing up (optional ) is the cue for a trained race horse to slacken and return to a sedate pace. Scratching the neck and saying "that'll do pig "is optional but achieves the same effect, Loose horses are killers ,they have at least a 12 st advantage on you and can out accelerate most horses. On a turn , one on your outside is going to put you into the rails .I am loth to criticise jockeys for what they do in a race unless it causes danger or cruelty to horses and riders.

So interested to find this thread. I can’t bear Harry Skelton’s riding and his antics afterwards. Dropping the reins like that was horrendous and he often does the standing up lark. Afraid I generally find his riding style aggressive and untidy.
I never liked the way Ruby Walsh often stood up after the line while pulling up, it’s not a great look even if you do have balance.

I have to admit that I can't see any big problem with it. I'm sure he knows better than to do it with a horse that's putting a ton of weight into the rein and might fall flat on its face when he releases it. And by definition, he only does it when there are no horses in front of him.

I didn't see the races mentioned, but it seems he is being criticised in one post for hanging on the horses mouth, and another for dropping the reins ....

With equine social license coming onto the public's radar more each day don't you think it looks unprofessional and will set them against all forms of equine sport?

On TV the commentators quite liked the celebration - saying jockeys have been told to celebrate more to “show how much it means to them and the punters etc like it”. Not quite word for word but words to that effect.

So wouldn’t say everyone is against it by any means, particularly non horsey people watching TV yesterday would have had that explanation and taken it to be fine.

Im on the fence, the horse should be supported whilst pulling up but also can’t get annoyed over someone celebrating and quite enjoy seeing it after the final showjump eventing.

I can see where they are coming from needing to celebrate a big win to show what it means to them and the punters, but I just feel after a horse has galloped it's heart out to win a race it needs a bit more consideration towards it, I still stand by what I say I wouldn't want it being done on mine.
