Has anyone ever had their horse out on loan to Hartpury College? A friend is thinking about sending her 6 year old IDx there on their loan scheme but doesn't know whether it's a good or bad idea. Any feedback for her would be appreciated.

Boss, the grey horse in my sig, is my absolute baby and I love him to pieces but I had to retire him from eventing a couple of years ago and he was jobles. He's been at Hartpury a year and a half and it is totally fantastic.

They look after him fantastically, they dont hesitate to call if they need to know something or theyre a bit worried about something, they dont mind me calling for regular 'Boss reports' and I can visit/ride him anytime. He is never over-used, he's always very happy and they dont put numptys on his back (not that he'd let them anyway!)

Cant recommend it highly enough

Thanks Bossanova, that's exactly what she wanted to hear. If she sends her boy up, I'll tell her to look out for yours there. I think she now intends to go for the open day to have a look around.

I'm at university of the west of england, hartpury is a UWE campus but hates to admit it, and am there a fair bit and the horses are treated brilliantly. I've acctually just had a run in with them about jumping thier horses when they've only been back in work 6 weeks. (surely 6weeks is enough and its no more than 2ft 6 plus how are we supposed to pick a team when we can't jump. sorry rant) I would recomend people sending horses there. I imagine it'd be great for youngsters too, theres always so much going on!

It can work well - but your friend must be absolutely truthful about her horse in terms of his health, his behaviour, and his schooling, otherwise the staff will struggle to match him up with suitable students at the start of term before they get to know him well.
And during the winter months, there isn't turnout...or at best limited turnout, so if the horse doesn't enjoy being stabled on a busy yard, he may find it more difficult (although in most of the stabling, they can see each other through the bars so don't get lonely).

Depends on how your horse deals with a busy yard, with limited turn out.
My horse was there (with me not on working livery) for two years, he dealt with everything fine, and being there brought him on no end.
But I know horses that dont cope with it at all.
The livery horses are obviously doing more than the students own horses and probably get preferential treatment concerning turnout.
I wouldnt send my boy there, purely because he would get numptys riding him as he is that type!

My friends horse was a working livery for our last year, she thrived being there. Hartpury are very careful with their working liveries, otherwise they wouldnt have so many!
Lots of people end their horses there for years, so they obviously do something right! The facilities are lovely there, I miss not keeping my boy there anymore

I think Hartpury is a good college to send a horse too. They have good riders and i'm sure she could say no novices. The college I went to they struggled to get horses on loan and didnt have enough good ones for the amount of students. I saw horses go so downhill when they were ridden by numptys so much.

But when I visited Hartpury when I considered studying there, they had lots of nice horses compared to my old college. Was quite jealous. I didnt pass the jumping module on my ND because there was only about 3 horses that could jump a 3'3 sj course and intro xc course and none of those horses I ever got to ride and the ones I did ditched me at fences cuz they were bored of being jumped 2/3 lessons a day.

Im actually at Hartpury, although be it on the Vet Nursing course - I do have a nosey down there from time to time and can honestly say the guys are fantastic down there!!!

Really is a great college - only bad bit is the horrendous speedbumps there!!!

lol, i've heard about them in the last student rep meeting! Your the first person i've heard to completely sing its praises, always known it as great for the animals, bar the restricted turnout sited before but can be hard on the people.

Thanks for all your comments - I will print them out for her to read off tomorrow when I see her. She's been totally honest with them, told them he is green but eager, eager to learn, and what his vices are. He won't mind limited turnout, as he's usually stabled all winter anyway with restricted turnout. He is very easy to adapt - she's had him in a very quiet yard and also a very busy yard - he doesn't mind where he is basically.

LOL - bear in mind im only up there one day a week!! I dont have the joy of Hartpury 24/7 -

=ohh stduent rep!! PLEASE make the very last bump into college smaller!! its evilness!!

I really enjoy it there, my lecturers are fab and think I do stand a chance of being a qualified nurse come December!!

I went to Hartpury college for 4 years and loved it, now i didnt think it was the best in terms of education! most people on my course failed but that could have been because of horses to play with all the time and 2000 rugby boys! It was like pony club camp for 4 years but sooooooooo much better.

I had my horse on DIY there. However I WOULD NOT put my horse on loan there, just my opinion. They dont get much turnout and are ridden by lots of different people. They are looked after well and I guess it would depend on the horse. If it was a sensitive horse that needs a one to one it would be a definite no no. If its quite laid back, maybe... Having been there though i wouldnt entrust my baby to them....
