our grazing backs on to crop fields and as they are harvesting a lot of farmers children, friends etc use it as an opportunity to shoot the rabbits.one of my 3 gets in a real state ,,the other two are good so had a stressful afternoon with shooting left, right and centre.next time may remove them completely but im not always home and one year my horse jumped the fence.is this quite common practice.i accept living in the country i have to accept shooting even though i dont like it//

Having a hubby that enjoys shooting and with me obsessing over horses! I can see why it may get to you with it upsetting your horses but at the same time I can see why the shoot has to take place.

I would like to add that my hubby shoots on a farm that has horses on it and he does shoot considerately so not to upset the horses.

Could you try and liase a little with the shoot? Talk to them and see if you can arrange to be contacted prior so you can bring in the horse that gets upset? be polite and make sure you make it clear you understand they have a right to shoot on their own land and that your not against them shooting. I know from experience that people who shoot tend to be a little defensive (understandably).

Hopefully if you explain your concerns they will be willing to come to some arrangement.

Tell me about it! The field adjoining our grazing is for barley and they are quite happy to let anyone come in and blast the pigeons all day, every day. My horse is really bad with anything that goes bang and she can get in a right state. It wouldn't be quite so bad if the guns had their backs to the horse and shot the other way, but one year I went in and read them the riot act as the pellets and empty cartridges were coming down hundreds of yards away - on us, the horses, our cars, the lot. Believe me, being hit by lead shot HURTS. It is pretty red hot for a start. Also, they were set up in the hedge adjoining the road, which I seem to remember from when my Dad had a shotgun licence, is illegal.

I would have a chat with the landowner.

There is a leaflet which sets out the way in which shoots and those shooting should behave and also explains the law.

I can send you a copy if you wish. E-mail me at info@bhs-herts.co.uk with your Email address or postal address and I will send you a copy.
