Putting tights on a hairy cob to lift there feathers off the ground while out in the field to stop them getting muddy??
Has any one heard of...

Nope! I generally see people using turn out boots, mud boots bandages etc but never tights?

nope but i have wondered as a new to the hairy coblet world.. im just praying it dont get to muddy! I think to be honest using something like tights could cause problems, skin getting to hot etc.

they wont get muddy in the snow!!!! but will collect lots of snowballs in them .......

I have tried everything for my beastie hes a traditional showing cob it takes me forever when i need to go showing takes me an hour and a half to wash them then i get the good old trusty hairdryer on them!!! But i had a brain wave today about putting tights on him while out in the field to stop getting mud balls just wondered if anyone has heard of it or any other suggestions?

I've used tights for making the farrier's life a bit easier when his feathers are very muddy, its an old horsemans trick, so not so outlandish at all. Farrier doesn't get covered in mud and is able to trim better because feathers are up out of the way.
I suppose you could put cut off tights on to get him through a muddy gateway, but I wouldn't leave them on as the feathers are designed to protect the skin from mud. Part the hair and you'll see the skin is clean. Tights might also cause mud fever by creating a moist warm environment for the bacteria to grow. Just check his heels with your fingers when you pick out his feet for scabs or exudate just in case something is going on underneath the hairiness.
I live with the mud during the winter, don't wash it off and seldom brush it out. Sometimes less interference is better. When the next lot of snow comes and his feathers are snow white
, dry them off and apply pig oil or baby oil. This will help to manage the amount of mud that clings to the hair when the snow melts and they are wading through mud. Oil is great for mane and tails too in winter.

Thanks horseandrider! I do baby oil them once everyother day but i never wash his legs off after beeing in the field incase he gets mud fever etc i only wash them if im off showing him. Its going to be the ***** pony look then!!
