Has any one used a hay bar ?

you dont really need to clean it, they have a hole in the bottom so all the crap falls out thats left over (ie the shorter bits and the dust) - you need to fix it so its about 5inchs off the ground, so you can clear the rubbish up from underneath that falls out.

I use one and its great, works really wel for my horse. Ive fed wet hay in it, and haylage and normal hay.

yep, i've got them in all stables. better for dry hay, really, unless you have stokboard... i don't like the wooden walls getting wet.
i think if i got them again i might get the lower sized ones, not the big ones, even though my horses are large... just a bit easier for them to reach into. i really like them and would have them again, definitely. ideal for dry hay, keeping it out of the bedding. i find that the ones on wet hay keep it separate anyway, for some reason.

Best thing since sliced bread. My horse spent the first two weeks emptying it onto the floor but he soon got bored with that game.

I feed soaked hay in mine, it is set about 4" off the ground so I can get my hand underneath it but I also keep a rubber feed skip in the bottom and it catches the last drips off the hay and the seeds.

I use Haybars. They are really good and prevent and wastage.

My horse pulled all of his haylage out of it and then trampled it in the bed the first time I used it! I put a tie ring on the wall about a foot from the bottom of the Haybar in the corner (ie where the two walls meet) and put his haylage in a net and then tied it in to stop him pulling it all out and getting it in his bed. It works really well - he still has to eat from a lower head and neck position, but it takes him longer to eat and he can't pull any out on the floor!

I had them for four of mine and have gone back to nets. Big mare loved eating out of hers, but also thought it was a lovely perch - sadly it didn't last long having 800kg sitting on it

. Big gelding's head is so huge that he could only eat from the top of his as his head wouldn't fit in the narrower bit nearer the bottom. Tilly loved hers - pulled all the hay out and mixed it in with her bed and then started kicking the haybar at about 4.00 each morning (proved quite popular with the neighbours). I did try and persevere with all of them, but I now have two full size haybars, 1 pony haybar and 1 F/s sat-on haybar gathering dust in the garage along with numerous other things I have bought over the years.......

I love mine - ned was afraid of it for the first day or so, but then his love of hay got him over that small hurdle. I wouldn't be without one now.

The definitely save time if you've got a yard full to hay. we use haylage in ours and they work really well. They are a bit tricky to keep clean but I think the pro's outwiegh the cons!
