has anybody used hoof pads?

My TB ex racehorse had a bruised foot then developed an abscess which the vet cut out in my farrier's absence. he left a big hole which is right through to the soft tissue. i now face face the prospect of usng a hoof pad but I don't know anything about them. do

they last the 6 weeks, the same as the shoes and can anything get underneath them, which is a bit of a worry as there is a hole there!

I've had to do this in the past with my exracer TB as well - get the farrier to pack the hole before the pad goes on. The pads tend to be nice and snug so shouldn't be a problem with anything getting underneath it.

Mine was sound the next day after the pad was put on and we had to keep it on for the next 2 shoeings.

Hope your boy makes a quick recovery.

My girl has stromsholm pads... they are fantasic as cushion her feet from the harder ground. I cut the middle out as do not want her feet to become thrushy.... but when you buy them they will cover the hoof so will protect the hole.

I buy them from http://www.farriersupplies.co.uk/ really nice helpful people and only £3.25 a pair!

Good luck. x
