I've managed to persuade my obliging OH that it would be better to build some jumps for me rather than going out and buying them :-) - we're looking at building some simple portable fences, and wondered if anyone else on here had done this. What have you built? And how wide were they? I'm not sure whether to build full 12ft wide jumps or two 6ft sections.

Pics if you have them!

I am looking forward to the replies - I want to organise an onsite ODE for the liveries only (I'm a livery) and while we have about 5 permanent fences (mainly fallen logs artistically arranged :D), it's be nice to add some extras in without going down the working hunter route!

I looked into this. There is a place online where you can buy the anchors to secure the portsables down.
Have a look on eBay at xc fences - some of these are hand made. Hoping to make a few myself in the summer :) also planting a small hedge to jump. We own a 63 acre woodland that my OH currently works, it hasnt been touched for years so is pretty over grown - but there are a few parts which are beautiful and have natural tracks/they look like jumping lanes, planning on putting mine here - handy as can take them away when need be :)

Yes I've got some!! My ex built them for me. Only 3 but they are pretty good. Quite heavy though but still moveable with two people. Got a roll top made of three tyres equally spaced then wood around, also made stands so can be bigger. A pheasant feeder type thing and a multi height fence. It's triangular and has three diff heights dependant on which way you have it up. I think ours are 6ft one maybe narrower. And to be honest I'd like them tad longer but they are fine really. Good luck!!!

P.S. Don't forget to treat the wood otherwise will go green and rot away eventually.

My wonderful mum built some for me a few years ago. We had a tire fence which was pretty simple, lots of tyres strung up on a pole suspended in a hedge, further down the hedge we had a sort of small normandy bank which was already part of the natural lie of the field really. We had an amazing skinny role top fence which was made with one of those rope holders that looks like a giant cotton reel? (sorry not sure what they're called) with half fence posts nailed all the way around, really effective. Also had a corner fence which was very creative, an old climbing frame ladder which gave us the v-shaped frame with again half round fence posts in ascending size along the top and ones nailed upright in front and behind (sorry this is a pretty poor description). Then we made some temporary ones with showjumping wings either side like hay bales, big green barels, beer kegs and even tesco delivery boxes all pinned down to the field. Also some basic log piles and rails fixed to fence posts that we drove into the ground.
Looking back my Mum was very inventive! Hope that helps, good luck with making some x

be cautious ,some councils will increase your council tax if you build xc fences ,some even increase it if you put up showjumps or mark an arena out,it changes the land from agriculture status.
