Last week one of my school ponies came in from the field suffering from classic choke symptoms (excess saliva, ginding teeth, tucked up,v.tight gullet and neck-only symptom missing was discharge from his nose) vet came out and agreed it was choke. We treated it accordingly for 2 days and by friday he seemed to be back to normal. On vets advice we gave him a small net of hay friday am to see what happened, almost as soon as he finished the net he started salivating excessively again. Vet came out again and tubed him- the tube went straight into his stomach and came out again without having met any obstruction. His stomach sounded healthy and he has been doing droppings and peeing etc without any trouble. Vet wondered if it might be a problem with his saliva gland and gave him an anti-inflammatory and some penicllin. By yesterday morning he appeared bright and back to normal,so again on vets advice,we gave him a small amount of beet pulp and some hay morning and evening- the salivating returned as soon as he finished eating. The vet is bamboozled and so am i! Has anyone came across anything like this before?

My sisters cob salivates excessively when it is feed time he quite literally chomps at the mouth and foams up! Sometimes it isn't actually anywhere near feed time. in himself he always seems fine!!! But how odd yours sounds!

Yeah, the vet has said his teeth are needing a check, which we are getting sorted, but he doesnt seem to think thats the only problem. We've used this weekend as a test to see if we can identify if its when hes feeding that this is starting and that does seem to be the case- every morning hes been normal and by evening stables hes been normal too, but as soon as hes had beet or hay it starts again. So im thinking its the feed thats either triggering the excess salivation or there is possibly a problem in his mouth that we havent seen-maybe an ulcer under a tooth or something.
The strangest thing is the fact that he was text book choke for 2 days- he literally couldnt eat wed/thu. Very strange.

Yeah, you could be on to something there- although we are still using the same delivery of hay that we've had for a couple of months, although this bale could be off a different field etc. But i know exactly what you mean with the frothing at the mouth- its pretty horrible!
