Think it may be due to the wind the last few days Dexter and Spider have one eye that is watering a bit and a bit gunky and slightly swollen. Have had this before last year with another horse and it just went down.

Has anyone else's horses got this?

Am cleaning them 2-3 times a day and using optrex and a fly eye shield thingy now.

Yep, G had it on both eyes, looked really sore then were covered in crusty green stuff the next morning

But that they are ok now!

Spiders has only been sore for 2 days and Dexter's a day.

I want it all gone by the time I do Tweseldown though as I feel cruel!! May get vet out if not gone by Friday am

Ooo weird! All the horses at work yesterday had gunky eyes. None seemed in any discomfort but i did end up carrying round a tissue to give them a wipe every now and then becuase its more hassle than its worth explaining to the public that horses get sleep in their eyes too!

Jed gets it every year sometimes one eye sometimes two. It does go down after a day or two with golden eye (when he lets me put it in that is)

Not sure what causes it so will be interested to know what other people say.

F does, because of the flies

Silly thing won't keep a fly mask on - or rather his fieldmates won't let him.

OK so what is Golden eye and where can I get it?
Atty gets runny eyes every summer ans last year had to have them flushed.
It's just started up again now so I've got him a fly mask but doesn't seem to be helping much.
Anything that can help would be great.

Its an eye ointment and its the best. Works a treat on horses.

Go into your local chemist and they are sure to have it.

Yep, my youngsters have it at mo. Always happens this time of year - always assumed it was the flies. Can't keep fly masks on them as they pull each others off and fly repel is only so good.

Yep, the Moose had very sad-looking runny eyes last night, as the flies were dreadful in her field. I wasn't really sure what to do, so washed them off with a bit of plain water, which she seemed to like, and then put a wet tea-bag against each eye for a bit, which again, really seemed to help. I then put a good squirt of flyspray on her before she went back out. Fingers crossed she'll be better tonight as its a bit cooler today.

Cairo has had his eye being slightly swollen and a bit weepy. This year I have been taking his mask off at night as his eyesight is very poor now. Have left it on again 24 x 7 and his eye is improved. He also seems to be getting round the field ok with the mask on which was my concern.

Chancer has been fine but I am leaving his mask on all the time just in case.

Will try the golden eye on the old boy.

yeah i think it is the flies making the horses eyes a bit runny at the min - rocky had runny eyes for a few days so i put the flyfringe on and today his eyes have been fine!

Yep me too - one eye in particular was green & gunky. Glad to hear I am not the only one.

I have been making sure her her fly mask in on everyday and added a drop of Golden eye. All cleared up now touch wood.

Yep my mare's right eye was gunky and runny yesterday - it happens every year but keeping it clean and applying repellent (carefully) round the eye area usually does the trick.

One of mine gets sore eyes at this time of year too... its usually when the grass just is turning to flower... so I thought it was grass pollen. We don't get that many flies as our field is very open & always breezy....but whatever the cause Golden Eye works a treat.

My mare has really gunky eyes and i was starting to get quite worried as she will not let me get a fly fringe on her. I will have to try this golden eye stuff! Thanks
