Has anyone ever had a horse but given up riding?

I have a horse who doesnt really like being schooled much (plus the menage is quite deep so I tend not to use it) and is very spooky when being ridden out (which neither of us enjoy much). But he is as happy as larry on the farm, in his stable and field, and come to think of it so am I. Part of me is thinking why do I bother with the riding if its problematic, when I can just enjoy the caring for him.

Anyone had anything similar?

I've had my pony for just over 4 years now .. Not ever ridden her and never will! She loves a wander round the lanes inhand and is lunged as she needs a bit of exercise. She's as happy as any of the other horses on my yard :) don't think horses see it in the same way as we do, so long as they get some mental stimulation they're happy!

Ahh how lovely. Sometimes I think maybe my boy is trying to tell me something and maybe I should listen. He is a real pleasure to be around and I love the caring, walks in hand and lungeing (as mentioned above).

I don't ride mine. He came to me when he desperately needed a home but I am too heavy to ride him and don't know if I will ever lose enough weight to ride him. I love looking after him and he is happy and has a safe forever home with me.

Mine swap between daily work...and field ornaments.. they don't mind and neither do I. I like looking after :)

Though planning to get back into the competing scene after years the summer coming up so horse is in work getting ready!

When i had a spook with my tb i stopped riding him and didn't ride for a good 6 months, but it eventually got to me and i sold him and took my friends safe horse on loan, then he jumped a gate wrong and did his back in so i sold my saddle and i still haven't ridden, since august. Im looking for a new saddle now cause he is fit again but if he wasn't i wouldn't be bothered. I enjoy horses more than i enjoy riding.

I have two. one retired tb and a green ID. I don't ride and haven't for 6 months as i am pregnant. Can't wait to get back on though i don't think either of them mind not being ridden!

I wouldn't worry - even if we ride them the other 22.5 hrs per day we are on the ground with them anyway. Plenty you can do on the ground to make it interesting anyway. Important thing is you enjoy your munchy and love him.

yep and both me and lass were happy. I have always loved working on the ground far more than riding so when baby became unridable due to sight it didnt bother me abit. heaven to me was out in field poo picking watching the herd lol :)
