Hi,

I am looking to sell my mare this summer.

After lots of thought I have decided its the right thing to do (I think!).......
...... I have never sold a horse before, but we can not afford to keep another horse which is not what I really want!

I have no idea what to value her at & really want to make sure she goes to a good home. Does anyone have experience of selling horses or how to value them?

I have been looking about at prices, but the range is huge. My mare is quite unusual, which makes it even harder to pin point a price. I do not want to over price her and not get any response and I definately do not want to under price her and get dealers & people wanting to make quick cash!

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Kate

good starting point on price is to consider the market for your horse - i.e. how many people would be capable of riding her and how she behaves at shows or whatever she competes at

then age, size, weight carrying ability, performance record

then any illnesses, stable vices, lumps and bumps, special diet requirements, laminitis/sweetich prone-ness

after that your location in the country and ease of people getting to you - e.g. horses in remote parts with long distances to travel can be cheaper than someone right near good road connections in the Midlands

best put up some photos and details and ask here

Most important part - after pitching the price right and writing a good advert - is to be totally, 100% honest with any prospective purchaser, which might mean being brutally honest with yourself first.
If you want references or to see the possible new home, it's up to you to ask, if you're going to make your own enquiries about them, tell them that's what you're going to do. They can always walk away if they don't like it...
Oh, and then there's picking where to advertise, or whether you prefer word of mouth...

Okay, thank you. Not sure how to upload pics, but I'll try!

She is:
-15.2hh
-Skewbald
-Tbx
-Mare
-8yrs (this June)
-Fully Vaccinated/Passported/ I/D Chipped
-CHAPS registered.
-Weatherbys non-TB passport

Has done local shows- placed everytime(mostly 1st) Pre-Lim Dressage (Only once due to lack of time at that point in my life) 5th out of 25.
Sire won HOYS (Stetson).

VERY loving temp. Loves to jumps and x-country at home. Hacks alone or in company. Would be happy as a hack or would go far in showing, dressage or jumping if time spent with her. Ideally suit more experienced rider, as she can just plod about if you do not press right buttons!

Been with me since she was 9mths old(hence very sad sale!). Can include nearly new fitted tack(ideal VSD saddle & Barnsby bridle)

She does have a scar on her White LH leg, it IS only skin deep and is easily covered for shows - if you did not know it was there you would not see it.
We would be open to a Vet and she has no vices.

Can not seem to upload photos on here????????..... Need to see her really, as she looks like a pure Tb but coloured.

Thanks for this.

Have a look at the posts in new lounge as there was someone looking for a coloured horse fitting your mare's description! If I can find it I will let you know who it was!!

If you really DON'T want to sell her (and don't need her sale price to buy a new horse) there are plenty of coloured sport horse studs that would jump at her on breeding loan. That would enable you to keep 'control' and ensure her future.

But there are also some very nice people wanting very nice horses who WOULD give her a good home - and keep in touch. I'm not IN to coloured horses, but from what I have seen of prices, and based on your description, I would advertise her at around the £5,000 mark.

I would love to just put her on loan, but I do need the money from her sale to get another horse. Its heart breaking.

Why are you selling her? She looks like a sweetie!

Hi,

The reason I am going to sell is 2 things:
1. The main reason, her size, I was hoping she would get to at least 16.1hh. I am 5'7 and currently 11stone (7months after having a baby!) - so she can take my weight easily, but I do feel a bit tall for her.
2. As I mentioned, I have a 7month old baby and I can not spend the time on her that she needs. With the time I do have, I would like a horse that is easier to ride.

I know she can do what I want from a horse, but there is no point in always wishing she was a hand bigger all the time. If she does not go this summer she will then be getting on for 9years of age etc.

Thanks,

Kate
