Has anyone experienced Peroneal Tendonitis?

I haven't been to the doctors about it but I'm quite sure it's what my issue is. I don't get foot pain, it's mainly where it's shown in this picture that I got from Google; from the ankle and above.

PT.jpg

I've been okay riding once a week for about 45 minutes but anymore than this or for any longer, it seems to start getting aggravated. The other day was the worst experience I've had with it where it actually gave up and I could no longer hold my foot flat in the stirrup anymore. I was currently out of my seat in a gallop at the time and it just collapsed inwards and was bouncing on the outside of my ankle like it was dislocated or broken.

It was okay once I was off but it seems to be aggravated when I'm stood up out of the saddle or trotting. I might try to start taking my foot out the stirrup periodically during a ride to give it a twist about but that can be difficult with my horse who needs all hands on deck a lot of the time.

It happened last summer and I thought it was the saddle as it was no good for either me or my horse anyway. Before changing the saddle, I tried stirrups with a wider tread, I got new stirrup leathers just in case the others were too unevenly stretched, tried different boots and different length stirrups. It stopped for a while when I got the new saddle around October but now it's lighter in the evenings and I'm riding a bit more, it's started again.

I just want to be able to ride without being in pain. I'd love to hear what everyone else does who suffers with this, please.

Thank you!

No but I’ve got Achilles Tendonitis, had it for probably 2 years now. Made an appointment for later this week to see a private podiatrist. Over the time I’ve had it I’ve done the exercises, got the shoe inserts, stopped wearing wellies, had massages etc. and I can’t get it sorted.

I’d never heard of it before reading this post but having seen that photo, I think I do! Riding doesn’t affect it but if I’ve been sitting still for a long time and then try to move it’s really sore and when I do Pilates and hook it behind my other leg it REALLY hurts.

Not peroneal tendonititis but I have previously strained the peroneal tendon. Whilst it can feel fairly innocuous in comparison to other things it’s not something to just leave untreated as in absolute worse case scenarios it can lead to longer term foot drop.
Physio, ultrasound and rest (day to day walking was fine but anything high impact was out) and it sorted itself and hasn’t reoccurred

I've had it on and off in varying degrees for the past 15 years.🙁. It got set off by having to poo pick a rutted field and spraining it and having to continue poo picking and not letting it heal and it has regularly sprained at the slightest excuse ever since. I've found the best way to manage it is to wear good hiking boots all the time including riding in them. It never gets totally better though, just manageable. I'm currently doing physio exercises for it every day hoping they will help. Some days I can only ride in walk or without stirrups.😢
Mine is also partly because I have high arches.

Yes I have/had (hasn't reared its head in a while) this, mine is related to wider arthritis/enthesitis. I'd talk to GP and consider any other niggles you have just incase there's a wider picture (but there probably isn't). I have physio on it and it's much much better. Might be worth seeing physio as you're probably compensating with your movements/posture elsewhere even if you haven't noticed yet. Things like this can turn chronic if not addressed, and they might recommend strapping it up for the first while to let the inflammation down.

Things that help me - decent shoes, physio exercises, pillow propped under leg at night, cold packs, walking just the right amount. Stretching properly before exercise.

Things that don't help - sitting with my legs tucked under my bum, shoes with shite support.

Hope you get some relief from it soon, mine responded well to the above, barely notice it now unless I've been sitting like a pretzel, do something stupid without stretching.

Yes, I suffered with this. It went from outside of my knee to where you indicate. Took ages to get to root of what it was, painful to ride if leg in wrong position and crouching was out of the question, plus sleep was disturbed PITA!. Fab physio eventually diagnosed and 3 months of physio and doing the exercises. Good luck!

Thank you so much everyone. It seems it's quite common then! I haven't ridden since Friday evening when my ankle had given up and the pain has pretty much completely gone now.

Did any of you have to get different riding equipment to help? Stirrups, leathers, boots etc?

I had peroneal tendonitis. Sorted out by physio and still do the exercises to strengthen the muscles. My physio advised against any adaptations/strapping/orthotics etc. as he said it doesn’t help the muscles to work correctly so it may ease the symptoms but not cure the problem. He also suggested bare feet in the house to allow all my foot muscles to work harder than in supportive shoes.

I'm trying this now after keeping them strapped and in tight boots for a long time.

Okay so I hope it's not a fluke but I tried the Bow Balance stirrups for the first time today and I had no ankle strain at all!! It was actually amazing!

What stirrups are you using day to day? I remember riding in freejumps once and I'd never known pain like it, right where that diagram suggests.

Some of these newer apparently 'better' designs put pressure on the lower leg in places no one's really considered imho
