Hi,

I know these threads have been done to death, but has anyone recently with the petrol so high, moved from trailer to horsebox.

I have a 4x4 and trailer. I must admit, I love my car and am slightly reluctant to replace it, especially now winter is coming with ice and snow etc

However, I feel the cost of running my car with diesel is crazy. So was thinking of replacing car and trailer for a little 1.1 and a small horseobx.

Has anyone done this? And did it work out cheaper? Were you happier?

Or has anyone done the opposite and feels that's the better option?

I think it can be alot better and cheapest if you do a fairly big mileage for work etc
if you can mannage with a small car and horse transport is important to you ..however if you need a big car for hauling kids and only do a small mileage then its possibly better to tow and just have one big gas guzzler and a trailer but it is expensive with tax £400 and 30ish mpg @125 pence per ltr and going up so weekly runing about and going to work is expensive just to tow a trailer once in a while!! , I had a pick up for towing and a trailer now have 7.5t lorry with cushy living and loads of space... costed less to buy and less to run than truck and trailer and diesel car £30 tax and 60+mpg..hope this helps..
 
My friend did the opposite, she got rid of her lovely little horsebox and small car and got a 4x4 and a trailer. She totally regretted it. The 4x4 was such a gas guzzler that it was more expensive to run than a car and the small lorry.
 
Gone from Daihatsu fourtrak and Ifor 505 to 3.5t lorry a few years ago. At the time when I worked it out I was maybe a couple of hundred pounds worse off a year taking into account mot of the lorry, service cost of a lorry compared to a trailer etc but now with the price of fuel I'm actually much better off. Just going from a 2.8 4WD to a 1.4 car Im using £40 pw less fuel

yes nice to fill up these little cars with about £40 worth and think ok Im good for another 400+miles :D
 
This might be a really silly question but wouldn't it be just as cheap to just buy a little car to run along side you 4x4?

Effectively you'll be running two vehicles both ways and at least having two cars is useful if one breaks etc. I can't imagine it would cost less to insure and service a lorry than a large car but I could be totally wrong of course. I'm no expert!!

Obviously you can go to work in your horse box but might be a bit unorthodox.

If you do buy a small car don't worry. You'll love that too. I have a 1.6 seat ibiza and it's great fun. Like driving a go kart. Much nicer than a lollopy 4x4!
 
I think trailers will lose popularity as fuel costs rise.. the only thing that would realy be a good thing is when Equitrek or someone comes up with a uk friendly goose neck trailer then you could have a 3 horse trailer or 2 horse with living to put behind a nissan or mitsubishi type pick up, safer and more room than a normal drawbar trailer...www.fthr.com/horse-trailer

Yes i have just sold my beloved 4x4 and trailer and brought a Renault master two horse box and love it !!
Horses travel really well and its so nice to have them in the same vehicle. Great for the winter as i can actually see what im doing !! Its working out much cheaper to than pulling with my old gas guzzler even with two horses on !! Im going to get a small run around after xmas but im glad i made the swap and i dont think at the moment i could see myself going back to a trailer !!

Really? Even though you need to take extra tests for everything now and the lorry one's are even more expensive than trailering. And considering 3.5t lorries don't carry two large horses.

I've just taken my trailer test as hgv license was so far beyond what I could afford it was insane.

Do like the idea of a nice big trailer though. Can you import them and use them over here?

sadly yes you can import but not make legal easly they are over uk width and dont have the right braking systems, there are a few people with them but its dodgy ie if you had an accident or were stoped by vosa ..I wanted one but gave up after finding out how uk laws differ from the US...
 
O dear. Better start bothering equitrek for when I win the lottery then! That's a shame although it doesn't massively suprise me I suppose.

To me a trailer is much more useful than a 3.5 tonne lorry. There is no way I could put both mine on one and not be over weight! fatties that they are!
 
I've got a 2-horse trailer (bumper pull), a 24' aluminum gooseneck combination stock/dressing room trailer and a 4 horse box.

It all depends on how far I'm going or who I'm bringing along. The box is slower than the second coming (it's old), but is a lot of fun to drive.

The smaller trailer is handy and easy to take places. The big gooseneck is lovely to tow, has TV cameras front and back to watch the horses (all horses all the time TV).
