Has anyone got any experiences with horses with kissing spines???

Marco was first diagnosed with spinal cord compression in the neck, AKA wobblers, he was treated with an injection and then needed reassessing after 4 months.

4 months on he is still in alot of discomfort to be ridden and doesn't move well, he bites and reacts violently everytime you touch his back. Vet watched me ride him yesterday and has now said marco needs a back x-ray as he probably has kissing spines.

The vet told me that there are successful treatments for kissing spines, and that he should make a full recovery.

Does anyone have any experience of kissing spines?
any info very much appreciated, thanks.
 
In a nutshell,my boy had 3 spinal processes impinging and it was decided he would have the op.In horse hospital for 3 days,then back home onto box rest.He had to be walked out two/three times a day.We then progressed onto lunging in a pessoa.Approx 8 weeks later we could start riding again.Came back into work really well and could actually jump quite well.My vets were of the opinion that if he had the ability before there was no reason why he shouldn't be ok after the op.
 
that is very promising to hear! i suppose it depends on the individual and circumstances. im glad to hear your horse made a full recovery!

Anyone else know of any horses with KS?
 
I had a TB livery a few years ago that had KS diagnosed, went to Marcus at Rossdales had the operation, then box rest, lunging, pessoa work and after 6 months he started work again under the direction of a physio and he made a full recovery and had to be sold on as owner got pregnant again and couldn't cope with another baby and a horse he went to a lovely home and is out competing. I have heard of others having injections that have worked for a time but not long term.
 
I had a horse with KS in 7 places, I'm at boarding school so I gave him to a friend for free as I don't have the time to spend on the walking etc. he had the op in October and was given the all clear to be ridden this week.

I am in two minds as to whether to buy him back, as he is such a lovely horse. There are 4* event horses that have had KS ops, but it is all kept quite hush hush.
 
friend had a horse with Kissing spines and navicular, navicular being medicated and 2 spinal processes removed, box rest and rehab and now he is back out in the hunting field, 3ft3 - 3ft6 hunter trials and eventing. Sound as a pound and jumping better than before. Depends on the individual I guess@
 
Our mare is back in full work better than ever after having the op at the beginning of June last year.

It's not a final sentence, more of an opportunity to put things right, but make sure you have scintigraphy before the op - you don't want to put them through all of that only to find they have something else wrong......
 
My mare had the op (age 16) 7 affected processes....she is doing amazingly
