Has anyone had a yearling in foal

This is a question I never thought I would ask, I got a mini in may, i wormed her and put out in a very small field with my other mini, in the last 2 months she has got a huge belly, I am waiting for my worm count to come back. The vet is booked for next week for a blood test. Has anyone ever had a filly in foal, this filly is in a field which has geldings all around yet does not squirt out at all unlike my friesian.
Tbh this scares the hell out of me and if she is in foal I have to do what is right for her.
 
I hope to hell she is not in foal - never put anything in foal until it is 2. They are not physically developed enough to cope with it and it will seriously affect her development. It is highly unlikely even in the wild yearlings do not often get pregnant. Fingers crossed she isn't
 
When u say yearlin do u mean covered this year thinkin she would foal as a two yr,sorry for lack of punctuation n shortenin of words am not a chav just a lazy bugger tryin to type off my phone xx
 
Also meant to add i have had a mare foal as a two yr so covered at a year old , i deal and she came already in foal from gypsies i dont agree with covering under three yr but in a lot of dealers cases they do throw them in together and never think about the long term x
 
Trust me this is my hell, why I why would anyone do this, I got her in may, she was 1 in April, the vets have said it is possible. I have a lot of youngsters and would not dream of putting a baby in foal. The only thing I wanted in foal is my friesian in about 6 years via ai.
 
Oh i didnt mean that its in anyway your fault did u buy her from a dealer if u did then its possible because sadly some just dont bother about splitting fillys up x
 
I had a yearling in foal, she was 2 on 01/04 and foaled 23/05 when she was just 2. It wasn't a planned pregnancy and I too was worried sick when I realised she was in foal. Fillies start to cycle at anything from 6 months old. If your mini is in foal there is nothing you can do about it other than await the birth. My vet advised as little extra feed as possible to try and minimise the risk to the filly. In the end she foaled unassisted and was a terrific little mum. Foal is now backed and riding and mum is out doing dressage tests. Not how I would have done things but it worked out well in the end. Good luck xx
 
No doubt this was an accident, good luck. Hopefully all will be well, no point worrying too much, it is not your fault and, indeed, probably no one is to blame, these things happen sometimes for all the wrong reasons. Yes I have know the outcome to be not the disaster ..... but I suspect sometimes it's not.
 
Yes, its happened before, its quite possible for a precocious colt and filly to get together - not the norm but is has happened.
Had a yearling filly drop a whopper of a filly foal in late October one year - she had come from breeder in the early spring & not had contact with an adult entire, tho the breeder had kept all the foals on together through their 1st winter :rolleyes:

Please note that mum & baby did very well at the time & both went on to be busy people in later life :)

I hoe its not for your sake, but worth getting her checked by your vet.

Don't panic. Nearly all my youngsters have gone through a pot bellied stage, one we used to call the Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pony he was such an odd shape! (I went on to do BYRDS with him and he was beautifully put together in the end!).

If you have wormed and put her on good grass I would strongly suggest she just has a big belly. Keep up your worming regime, babies need worming very carefully, and if you are still worried get your vet to blood test her to see if she is in foal or not. I'd be 99% sure she's not in foal tho, just pot bellied.
 
It's possible. I had friend end up with a yearling accidently pregnant and gave birth at 2.
The foal has been a success (2*)!! The dam has had some after effects but it hasn't stopped her being a nice RC allrounder.
 
yes, i have. not planned, realised she was getting a bit rounder in october had her bloodtested and she was in foal. I had no idea when she had been covered so i was in a blind panic. Anyway she produced a super filly on 25.03.12. All is well. If i had known the colt had been anywhere near she would have been pged, but i didn't, just meant a few more than normal sleepless nights on foal watch as i had no idea when it was due
 
Not personally however there was a lady on one of the yards I have been on that had a mare who got pregnant as a weanling/yearling, because of the age no-one thought she could be pregnant after a stallion got in with her and the next year she had a colt so it is definately possible.
