Has anyone had any problems with wood pellets as bedding?

I have been using Corley Bio-wood for sometime and the first pallet was fine but the latest stuff i've got smells really fusty like mould if that makes sense? I turn the bed everyday and its not let to be very wet or deep littered. I am wondering if its the hotter weather but the bed is really warm when its banked up to let the floor dry during the day. Have contacted them and they said clean it out. Have done and started again but same problem. Wondering if its the batch or something i'm doing wrong?! Any experiences appreciated

I found it went really dusty as my mare wasn't wet enough - she tends not to wee in her stable, in 10 days she might wee once, preferring to wait until shes out.

Maybe this is my problem, i've done exactly as directed but its dusty and almost smells fusty (not very technical description I know!) she poo's allot but not really very wet...

one of mine is like this i tend to sprinkle it with water xx or take some clean out and mix some darker stuff from another stable in x

mine has gone very dust like around the edges where it has been in there a while. I am going to sprinkle it and see what happens

I have the same problem & have completely emptied & restarted the bed from scratch twice (Natures Best) but my lad is so clean, he only poos in once place & it's not disturbed so it takes less than 5 mins to muck out.

He is fairly wet but even so it is so dusty I cannot see out of my glasses after being in the stable for seconds!!

I have tried various methods including putting the dusty bedding into where I have dug out the wet & mixing with shavings but to no avail. I also tried putting more water on varying from a little to lots & it just broke down even more into a really thick heavy dust.

I have used them all winter & they were fab and I can only think that the combination of the dry weather & my lad being extra clean is the cause. Because he is so clean, when I take out poo only there is so little bedding in the barrow that it looks like I have poo picked the field!!

My friend uses it for her mare who is messy so is taking lots more bedding out each day than I am (therefore putting more new pellets in) and her bed is perfect. We use the same method but my bed is terrible

I have had this problem with shavings in the past when my lad was out overnight & the bed just seems to deteriote in the summer.

Yesterday I emptied the box completely AGAIN (arghh) and have just put pellets on the bottom layer to soak up wet & have put in dust extracted shavings.

As soon as winter comes I will go back to pellets as they really are fab normally.

The trouble with wood pellets is you have to mix urine in with the bed, which i personally find unhygienic. If the bed is dry it is dusty. Either way this is bad news for the respiratory system. Dust and ammonia are not healthy.

Teddyt - there is absolutely no need to "mix in" the urine - if you want to lift it out and replace it daily then that would be fine - if the bed became too dry then you could always add water - however I've not found it dusty at all...
