Referring to an Adder.

I 'think' I've seen 2 cases... when I say think, I mean I couldn't come to any other conclusion. Both formed absusses, both needed a-b's, and one had to be lanced, the other burst on its own accord.
Trouble is, the horses were bitten on their elbow, the other their chest. Did the horses lay on the snake?
I've heard about another case, a bite under the fetlock - which makes more sense really!
I am currently dealing with the second 'case', a 5 month foal. I want to know, if you have had experience with such as this, what did you do to aid the healing?
Tell me all you know!
 
My YO's horse was bitten on his chest by an adder. She was riding him down a narrow path with close banks either side and he suddenly reared up and she saw the snake. She didnt realise he'd been bitten until she got back to the yard tho (was only a couple of mins away). Im not sure what treatment he had but she's got a picture of him with a bald patch where he was bitten.
 
A friend of mines youngster got bitten on his wither by what we guess was an adder. He probably rolled on it - it's the kind of thing he would do!

He was swollen and sore on the area and when we clipped it we say the double punctures. He was fine in a couple of days, no ABs needed.
 
Not sure of all the details but a friend's youngster was bitten by the side of her mouth. this was a couple of years ago now but I remember at the time it looked pretty horrific - swollen and bits of skin and flesh coming off. I think they thought she might end up permanantly disfigured because of it but now there is just a very small mark where the bite was but you probably wouldn't notice it if you didn't know it was there. No idea what treatment she had though.
 
it is possible as adders like shaded queit places but will only attaack if they feel threatened so please please its so rare dont go on an anti adder thing - they are so rare and if see one feel honoured :) x
 
This is very interesting as my youngster come in from the field just over a week ago with a huge lump on her chest and her fetlock! The leg went down and we found two puncture wounds but the chest is still up a bit and its gone hard now and again there is a mark which looks like a bite, we thought it could have been a snake?? For two days she was a little quiet but then find and back to her old self :/ im hoping the hard lump still on her chest will go by itself, any advice?
 
My old mare was bitten on her head whilst grazing last summer. Her whole head swelled up, the skin oozed where it was stretched so much and the fur fell out. Her tongue was also massive, filling most of her mouth. She had antibiotics and I think antihistimines and the swelling went down in a few days, lust leaving bald patches.

I agree, Iam not anti Adder, just unfortunate for the horses. Wrong place, wrong time.
 
My old cob was when a livery borrowed him for a hack! We dont know what snake but there were 2 puncture marks on the fetlock. He swelled up more than you could ever imagine (think sheath popping out, eyes swollen shut, couldnt breath). He had a massive dose of steroids and antibiotics for 2 weeks and it went down eventually and he was fine afterwards. Rather scary though!
 
My cousin's hackney was bitten on his sheath (of all places, poor boy)while he was living out. At first glance the vet thought it was just some sort of infection but when looking properly you could literally see the holes where he had been bitten and he had puss dripping out! He was quite depressed and he had a/b's & had to keep having it hosed down.
 
My boy was bitten on the rump by a snake, massive and weirdly flat area of swelling, when the swelling went down a bit I pulled out 2 dried snakes 'teeth' definately not skin of my horse and despite using derma gel everyday which always keeps white hairs at bay, he has white hairs left forever! I can only guess he rolled on it as he's 17hh unless there are flying adders out there??????

it took a good month for the swelling to go down and he was off colour but no temperature and he had no muscle damage which can happen with poisonous bites.
 
yup, she was bitten by a gaboon viper and haemoraged from every orifice (blood everywhere) and was dead within 2 hrs terrible to see, may she RIP.
