Also in Breeding Forum.

When you import a horse that has been registered abroad, presumably for breeding purposes you have to re-register it in the UK with the relevant breed society?
Soooo, do they take your paperwork and say "Yep, ok fine" or do they charge you a rather large amount of money, insist on seeing import documents and then insist on inspecting said horse to make sure it meets general conformation requirements? Not that I think that checking a horse isn't in fact built like a moose is a bad idea, but they do charge rather alot of money for it. The AQHA were happy with photos

The Associación Argentina de Fomento Equino is a registry for ALL horses (all breeds and types). Does this sound like a good idea? A bit simplistic?
They've just introduced a passport system for horses (does this sound familiar?) and the passport is basically the same as the 'libreta sanitaria' which is compulsory for all horses and shows all vaccinations and records AIE tests (Coggins) but enables horses to travel abroad. Oh, and I have to send it to Buenos Aires for them to stamp it then send it back, blah blah blah...
God this country is complicated!
Anyhoo, back to original questions please Registering imported horses and the All Horse All Breed registry
Thankies

Imported one from Holland to UK. She came with her Dutch passport, which is legally valid here. However, changing registered owner means going through the British breed society, which you have to join first. So it effectively costs to change owner's name. Otherwise, very simple but imagine this is a European thing. Sounds much more complicated for you...

With Spanish horses there is a cost and now with the change of stud book ownership from Yeguada Militar (the military stud) to ANCCE (the spanish horse breeder assoc) there is quite a significant price difference.

Prior to the change a person wishing to breed had to order a breeder/owner number and then once horse was in the UK, a full vet check and id chart was drawn + submitted to BAPSH with payment £60. So with vet check of about £60, it cost about £120 to get a horse registered.

NOW
Owners need either a breeder or owner code, breeder code is £100, plus the afore mentioned check and paperwork submission, plus the purchase of a horse owner card approx £10. So first purchase and reg is now nearer £230, and once you have to breeder / owner code about £130.

It is essential that you pay for it because returns are done each year on Spanish horses. Horse will be removed from the previous owners aquisitions list - if it does not appear somewhere else on a 2nd persons ownership list there is a risk the horse will become de-registered and then a potential loss of value of that animal may occur.

So Spanish paperwork is quite expensive but also crutial.
