has anyone kept horses on a minimum wage?

I'm not on min wage but with a child & one wage my disposable income is probably the same as someone without dependents on min wage. Depends on other living costs really, friends daughter has 3 on min wage but only has horses & social life to pay for.

have managed between jobs to keep 2 on JSA however have very cheap 24/7 good grazing and mine have very good feet etc :)

I am on only just over minimum wage and manage 2 (and a mortgage with OH) I do all the over time I can manage and keep them as cheaply as possible but it's still a struggle.

I have 2 cobs, good doers is an understatement, they're both unshod, one is retired, the other is 3 but farrier says he has such good feet he doubts he will ever need shoes. This helps a lot!

Also not on livery, we rent a field on a farm. My mum will sometimes help out and buy some hay if things are tough.

Oh and I don't smoke, go out, drink much, rarely buy anything that isn't for the horses. Can't afford holidays etc... Sometimes I think I'd like to be able to afford to buy myself some stuff... But then, what would I buy?! Clothes, posh smellies or something like that, I can live without. So I wouldn't change it.

i keep mine on min wage 30hrs per week. but i dont have sky or contract phones or even house phone just good old pas you go mobile. also i dont often go out at weekends infact me and my husband out out for a meal last week for the first time in 3 yrs. i also have a 3 yr old daughter. my field rent is extreamly cheap i pay 40.00 per month for fields stable electric hay and straw. dont have shoes on just regular trims. its doable even with higher field rent but other luxerys are put to 1 side. its also the unexpected vet bills that you need to think about i have owned my new youngster for 5 months and have had issue after issue for him needing treatment. for lice worms castration, infections ect and we sat dwn and worked out that i could of bought a half decent broken horse for the amount i have spent already lol

I know plenty of people who manage to keep 2 horses whilst they are on benefits (don't get me started on that) so it must be possible on on NMW. Don't ask me how though I am on a higher than average salary and still seem to barely scrape by!

has anyone kept horses on a minimum wage?
Hmmm.....

I've known bosses keep their workers on a minimum wage but I did not realise that horses got paid !! :D:D

Sorry, could not resist ..... TAXI !!

Lol ROG! I managed to just scrape by a couple of years ago when I was jobless. I literally went hungry and cold so I could keep my two horses. Everyone manages somehow. :-)

I am a student and looking to buy a horse soon, it seems a little bit mad but I am a mature student so have savings and live with OH so have enough money really. My money is pretty much my own apart from rent and occasional bills (I paid the hefty winter bills so I'm thinking it's his turn until next winter!) I literally don't spend on anything apart from my car and phone bill. I don't have a part time job yet (easy life so far!) so when I do will be able to spend on horse (lessons, going to shows and extra things) depending on earnings! Probably a full time job over the summer, most likely minimum wage although I do have experience, sigh!

Most students go out and get hammered spending AT LEAST 20-30 a week (and the rest) so I think that's £80-120 for livery covered!
