That probably doesn't make sense so I'll explain. I had to have my horse put down last September and I'm not in the situation currently to get a new one. Partly time, money and we really need to buy our own house. I miss it so much though, I still help look after my friends horse and my friend has now got her own field and stables which is amazing but it was always going to be for our two horses, I love going up there but it makes me very sad also. I've started having riding lessons again which has helped but it's not the same.

Is anyone else in a similar situation and how do you cope??

My husband lost his gelding last winter, but doesn't want to get another one at the moment. He rides my horses occasionally, and helps to look after our daughters mare, and our new foal.
I think (though being a big macho man, he'd never say so) that he still isn't over the loss of his other other, and I don't think that until he does get over it, he will be ready to get a new horse

Im lucky enough at the moment to hae 3 horses (well 2 horses 1 pony)

1 is for my 2 year old son to learn to ride on (had her for years)

One horse I compete on and the other I have had to put out on loan untill I have more time to do stuff with him.

Im sorry to hear of your sad loss couldnt you have a horse on loan (elimimnating the cost of purchasing one)

At least you can have some fun untill you can afford to buy or even strike up a deal to have horse on loan with view to buy and pay in installments?

I always seem to find money to fund my horses (my OH always saying to sell one to cut back costs... Yeah Right !!!! ) I just go without so I can afford to get them things they need

I'm lucky in that we still have Jesper but he had to retire this February when he was only 10yrs old. Having recently bought a house the money simply wasn't available to buy or keep a suitable riding horse. This summer we bought a gorgeous yearling who lives out with my retired pony (yes I have three) for me to bring on and eventually ride. But yes I miss riding so much. I'm lucky my friend lends me one of hers to hack but it's not the same as riding your own. I do count myself lucky for still having Jesper to fuss over though.

I lost my mare in July and have just got another at the end of October. She is on loan but I have been told if we really click and I want to then she will consider selling her.

I hated not having a horse as it is such a big part of my life now. However it's strange trying not to compare the new one with the old.

While I didn't have a horse I rode my sisters and a friends but it is nowhere near the same as having that bond with your own which I really missed.

I understand other things in life get in the way though and while you have your horse you are willing to compromise but once they are gone it does take a bit of consideration about where your priorities should lie so I understand your hesitation in getting another. Loaning or sharing might work though?

Thanks for your replies, it's nice to hear of other people's situations. I had my girl on loan anyway so when or if I do get another I'd have one on loan again I think.

If it was up to my heart I'd have one now but the logical part of me tell's me not too, it wouldn't be fair at the moment but I miss having that bond so much xxx

Yep I lost my precious boy in August and although I do still have a mare she is currently broken for quite some time to come yet...so dont ride just have a very expensive woolly pet to pay each month although wouldnt change it for the world.

I am hoping to get a new one in the new year but depends on what money I can raise, but will also be going to keep my skills up by having some private lessons at a good school until such time I can have my own again...

Horrible not having something to just play around with and go for nice long hacks on etc etc...craving it badly at the mo...

No it's never the same, doesn't matter how many horses you loose over the years as they had their own personalities and you never forget them and me and the OH still have a chuckle when something reminds us what happened 30 odd years ago. But each new horse is like a new book, open the first page and loose yourself in a new experience.
