has anyone ever made there own stables iv got a couple of field shelters as mine currently live out and was wondering how hard it would be to make them in to actual stables or to build my own pics of your handywork appreciated to give a few ideas thanks

It depends on the size and structure of them and how easy or hard you want to make it for yourself. Presumably if you want to brick off the front then you have to lay a base or whatever first, a wooden front would be a matter of framing and filling in I imagine.

If I wanted to turn my shelters into stables, and sometimes I do use them to confine animals (not only horses) I just hang gates across the front. Size depends, some sheds take 10', others 12' gates, that is the easiest and simplest option.

My Dad built our stables with breeze block walls and yorkshire boarding cladding on the sides the roof is metal sheeted. They are still going strong after 20 years.

OH made mine, concrete base with drainage channels, concrete block walls roof joists covered with sarking board and felt then tiled.

Would you need planning permission if you built stables rather than use gates on your field shelter

When we bought our land, we realised that the barns, and the stable blocks which were three stables and a feed room in an american barn were made completely out of pallet wood! The previous owner had worked for a pallet company, the whole thing had been very well thought out and executed, PM me if you'd like some pics. We've replaced the outer walls as they'd rotted (the whole lot is about 30 years old now!) but all the internal stabling and walls are as is.
