My horse- who should be the quiet easy one is being a bit of a pain at the moment!
I have 3 paddocks- 2 being trashed at the moment and one resting. this is split in half so as soon as the weather turns they can be used to rest the winter ones...in theory!
However one of the horses just plods calmly out in the morning and straight through 3 lots of electric fencing to graze, and if he feels like it tear around churning up my rested paddocks!
Ive watched him, not intentionally but he now cant even be bothered to wait for me to shut the gate and go to work before escaping! He puts his head under the top wire, flips it over his wither and casually steps over the bottom strand.
He's very clever thank god and the few times its gone wrong for him he waits patiently for me to arrive and free him but its only a matter of time til he rips a leg off. (its already costing a fortune in fencing and time!)
He's fully clipped so needs a rug, he's also got a hatred of being brushed, a home of heavy clay and a love of rolling so needs a full neck turn out!
Has anyone some how connected something to the rug to zap the horse? I wondered about tin foil or something?

Yes - Hang a dogs check chain - or a piece of chain link from the front straps - needs to be long enough to make contact with the fence and horse - In your horse case - sew a strip of thin chain to the top of his neck rug so that it also hangs inside - make it a bit loopy. Sew a length down the crest of the neck rug, ensuring it is connected to the loop around the neck.

Do check that your fence is not shorting out anywhere and doesn't have too many joins in it - the more joins the weaker the current. I had one that used to go under too - really frustrating.

Someone just went on Dragon's Den with a rug designed for this very reason - the Dragons didn't 'get' it and refused to back her - see if you can find out who she is and track her down for one!!

I use a bit of electric tape looped through the front of the rug - which works a treat. You could probably fashion a loop that goes over the top and inside the neck bit.

This is the same stuff as the previous eBay link, just a greater amount for cheaper! All the 'rug tape' is, is helicopter tape - we use it to repair surfboards on the beach if there's no time to do it properly.

Yes I've modified a turnout rug!!

My trad-lad decided his other name was Houdini, and decided that nothing but nothing, double-stranded electric fencing was there to be trashed, so I got some metalised fencing tape and put it round the neck bit of his rug as well as a huge wrap-around where the rug does up in front, THEN put a headcollar on him and "wired" that as well.

We happened to have the electrician working in the yard at the time............. I called him across for a coffee. Nearby was the stable where Trad-Lad was being adorned ready to be turned out. Not thinking, I jokingly said "OK so you're the electrics expert, what you do think of this"??? - at which point he just visibly blanched and eyes went out on stalks, obviously horrified at the sight of the poor horse prepared for the medieval torture chamber. Words obviously failed him, bless him.

But it DID work, coz His Nibs kept clear of the fence and respected it from that time on!
