I am considering riding part of the Southdowns way, its on my doorstep and is crying out to me. Has anyone ridden it, whole or in part and how did you go about finding places to stay? How long did it take? Good bits, bad bits? Did you have some hairy moments or was it all plain sailing?

Would love to hear from you with your story and pictures, perhaps.

Well you sparked my curiosity and I googled it as its not too far away from me. I found this site, with accomm with stabling etc:

Of course if you do make it all the way to the eastern end, I'd be happy to bring you a picnic and a haynet before you turn back towards home :D

Let us know if you do go, I bet it'll be fab!

Yes I rode it with 4 friends in 2004. We were dropped off near the Winchester end and rode as far as Alfriston then inland home, it took 4 days.
We were very lucky with the weather but it is well worth doing, fantastic views.
The Winchester end is very flinty so we were walking nearly all the time for the first 2 days.
Each overnight stop we booked and dropped off horse feed the week before so less to carry, we stopped at pubs for lunch.

Thank you, Angelbones and Greysmeadow for the offers of food and refreshments. Thank you all for your interest. If any of you would like to join us it would be great. It won't be just yet but it would be nice to plan something. At the moment it is me, my daughter and our friend. If anyone could give an idiots guide to planning and the route, are there main roads? etc, it would be fab. Also, where you stopped off en-route, that would be a great start for us. How many miles did you ride a day?

Hope to hear from you.
