Has anyone used a 1.8 Passat Highline for towing?

Yes it is that one.
I have a pre Jan 1997 licence so i guess that makes it a B?

Passing your car test before 1997 means you have a B+E :)

That car is designed to tow 1500 kgs actual weight

I guess you will be looking to tow a horse trailer which it should be able to do weight wise BUT now it all depends on WHERE and WHAT CONDITIONS you are intending to tow it

Going 5 miles down a nice tarmac road is one thing but going many miles over all sorts of terrain is something else !!

If horse is near the 500 you will need to put everything except the horse in the car - water containers, buckets, tack, rugs, everything, otherwise it will tip it into being overweight

Points of law and safety ....

It is not illegal to have a trailer MAM which is higher than the vehicle towing capacity

It is not illegal to exceed the manufacturers towing capacity

It may be deemed unsafe to exceed the towing capacity but that would need to be determined ultimately in court

The vehicle manufacturer has based their towing capacity on what the vehicle will pull up a hill of a particular gradient

The GVW of the vehicle must not be exceeded - law
The MAM of the trailer must not be exceeded - law
The GTW listed on the vehicle muust not be exceeded - law
The GTW is the actual weight of both vehicle and trailer when placed together on a weighbridge

I never put anything else in the trailer when the horse is in there so that won't be a problem :) It all goes in the car.

510 weighs around 1000 kgs empty so a horse/load of 500 kgs would be the max for that and with a petrol engine it would not take much for it to start struggling IMO but flatish tarmac road should be ok

If you need a 510 for your horse I think it will weigh more than 500kgs though so you may find you will be overweight.

isnt the 500 what is left for horse weight - after the trailer weight has already been taken out of the equation at an estimate of 1000k for the 510?

Yes hence me asking what the horse weighs, as I think it will weigh more than 500kgs putting the load over the towing weight for the vehicle.

I don't need a 510 that is just what i have got. The horse weighs 460kg so as long as he doesn't put weight on we should be OK (not ideal but OK).
