my 27yo mare has had cushings for a few years now and has been on a regular dose of 1mg pergolide tablet per day. however her only symptom is a long thick coat that i clip all year round - she has nothing else and otherwise looks incredible for her age and is very spritely!

i've just had a test done to check on any progress since the last one and am waiting for the results, but this has prompted me to look back into it all again.

Does anyone rate the herbal stuff for this? does anyone use a drug and the herbs? and where is best to get it from?

I have been reading about Chastetree Berry which is Vitex Agnus Castus.

I have just joined a new site regarding EMS which covers all types of Metobolic Syndrome including lami and Cushings.

TheMetabolicHorse

Hope this helps.

There are other sites to search including Equine Solutions (sorry, dont have link) and Safergrass.org.

thanks for te replies both, i will look into hilton herbs and the sites suggested.

i've just had my blood results back for shadow and she's clear. she is clinically a normal horse. i don't understand whats happened!!!!!

on er previous test, she only went down to 44 after the supression test, but this time she went way down to 25 (27 onwards being cushings. the first thought was - did either test go wrong?! but my vet is adamant that they are correct. thougts are that maybe the pergolide has everything under control OR there was/is something else going on with the pituatry (sp?! sorry) gland.

so i've been advised to wean her off the pergolide over the next 10 days (i may take a few weeks), and keep a very vigilant eye on her.

whilst this is the best news i could ever ask for, how did this happen? has anyone EVER heard of this hapening?, ooh, and does anyone want any pergolide?? i have 200 going spare!!

Doesn't the suppressing test get masked if on Pergolide?????? Perhaps someone on here can put me right on this

I put my pony on Vitex Equids for a month before we sadly lost her: the depression she was suffering lifted almost immediately and kept improving, and her coat started to shed on her fluffy bits. She was already being given 120ml of modrenal (trilostane) every day, so this was a desperate measure to improve things. Sadly she was too far along but I do think it's worth a try. I got a 5l tub from my vet and I think it cost me about 60-70 quid.

Hi

I was a bit sceptical at first butI've just started to feed my 26 yr old pony who has Cushings Chasteberries from Dodson and Horrell, a 2kg tub was only about 8 pounds. She's been on it for about 3 weeks now, haven't noticed much of a difference yet, I must admit!, but maybe in the spring we'll notice a difference with her coat?!!....I'll have to keep you posted! Good luck though!
