...been a time when you have thought 'Why do I keep horses!' I was curious, because their a big commitment and responsibility, and for me I have had lot's of fun and pleasure, but, also lot's of worry and heartache.....sleepless nights and stress to go!

I have always said the morning that I don't full out of bed to do my horse, will be the day I give up horses for good.I will always do my horse no matter how tired,or what the weather is.....but, there have been times, just a fleecing thought, that only happens very rarely that I wonder WHY!

Ooooh yes, regularly twice a year normally February and March when I have just got wet through to the knickers for the third time that day, nails broken and torn filling haylage nets, grumpy horses and ungracious owners, chilled through to the bone and, it just happens to be THAT TIME OF THE MONTH too ... but then the sun comes out and I forget all about it

Yup...at the 4.30am start or when it buckets and I get soaked...but had a lovely hack this evening, makes it all better!

Yes! At the moment, I am seriously considering why I put myself through this heartache. The last 5 years have been hell. We bought a mare not realising she was in foal, she had the foal, but we lost the mare, leaving an orphan foal which I handreared. My beloved Icelandic was diagnosed with Cushings 2 years ago after a severe bout of lamintis. My other semi retired oldie came out of his stable recently on 3 legs and we are keeping everything crossed that he recovers enough to continue enjoying his retirement. I bought a horse a year a go to hack about on - she went lame 4 months ago and nerve blocks/xrays have showed she has arthritis (she is only 8). She has had the joint injected but is still lame - vet is coming yet again next week to see what we can do next. So yes - there has been a time when I question why I am doing all this and that time is now!

Yep, when you have aranged a night out with the girls and you can't catch the pony to put him in his stable then step in horse poo with your good shoes on...LOL "not"

I do too.
Bought first mare 7 years ago, had her 5, she was lame for 3 then had to be PTS as she had a brain tumour and went crazy and fitted reguarly.
Bought an 18 month old, lame at 3 with navicular, PTS a few weeks ago at 4 years 3 months because it was so bad (he also had DJD in the coffin joints and hocks).
Took on an elderly ex racer 6 months ago with a bad past, he's lame and has developed stringhalt but is still a happy chap.
Bought my 2nd youngster two weeks ago and he has been seriously injured - suspected air pellet wound.

I love them but the heartache seems to be non stop!

Oh yes. Three years ago, we had to have our 4 year old pts due to cronic OCD. Shortly afterwards, my advanced horse had suspensory desmitis but we manage to get him sound again but then he broke down and had to be pts. Then we bought a gorgeous 4 year old but he turned out to be too strong and not suitable for dressage. This year I had to have my four year old pts due to serious tenden problems which meant that he couldn't be ridden and was unsuitable as a companion.

When I am struggling to school my boy in the winter due to dark nights/ pouring rain/freezing cold/snow, I do wonder why I do it, but the highs most definately outweigh the lows and I wouldn't have it any other way.
