I have 2 dogs - 1 spayed - 1 not - only cos due to the EI over I have no job and cannot afford it yet.

As soon as I can afford it she will be done - I cannot stand her season !!1

My JR was castrated at 11 months, had to wait for them to drop and him to grow. Much safer for him not to have them as entire dogs are more likely to get into fights with other entire dogs (even if they are totally non-agressive like mine), plus don't have to worry about him running off after the ladies now (not that he did before he was done)!!

Both done (he & she)....as I need to leave them with a dog minder on occasions. Also avoids problems when I walk them, nor did I want to breed from them....they are both great natured dogs - so a shame really.

He recovered from the op straight away. She took a little longer - a day or two.

both mine were spayed/neutered at the rescues

All my dogs and bitches are done.....u would have guessed that already...lol.
All my cats are done, horses are done and every single rescue that comes through the door
grin.gif

I have/never will keep an entire male or female animal...full stop

3 unspayed bitches right now - next year it will be 3 spayed bitches - not going through this again I don't think.

3 bitches, 2 spayed but one not as she is only a pup. She will have one litter before spaying.

I see absolutely no reason why an animal should be kept entire unless you are going to breed from them. Otherwise, it's an accident waiting to happen.

Why will she have a litter before spaying?

I have 2 entire males, 1 castrated male (he wouldn't stop scenting in the house so they came off!!), 2 spayed bitches (though 1 is being done after her next season) 5 entire bitches.

why not at one point had 4 un castrated dogs, currently have 2 and a kennel full of foxhounds
just sounds a bit unfair to me seems like some people are doing this to their animals just to convience themselves.
never had a problem with my boys agression or running off after the ladies.

For one.....its not my convenience.....Im a vet nurse and I see first hand the consequences of not neutering. for 2 try living in a house hold where u have literally hundereds of dogs passing through your door/not kept in kennels and keeping them all entire
crazy.gif

Why would I keep my bitches entire and risk them getting a pyo or mammary tumours...when I had the power to prevent it
crazy.gif

I never intend to breed....so dont need to keep them entire for those purposes.

All my dogs have lived to a grand old age....have not lost one under the age of 13...so why change my choice of how I keep them
crazy.gif
it my choice....and this is what I choose
smile.gif

I think u only have to look at my dog forum posts to see why I agree with neutering...as a whole
crazy.gif

And another thing....I dont neuter for behavioural reasons.....I have no reason too

My JR was not agressive and did not chase the ladies, however as I never intended to breed from him it is IMO safer for him to be done as in my experience entire dogs can attract unwanted attention from other entire dogs when you are out walking. My 1st dog was not done, but got to 10yrs and then decided it was his duty to service every bitch in the neighbourhood (randy old git), so I would not risk this again. With regard to bitches if you had ever seen a bitch having to be rushed in for an emergency Speying due to a pyo, you would reliese that speying has bugger all to do with convienience for the owner and everything to do with long term health benefits (including reduced risk of mammory cancers).

calangel sorry if i offended,

just surprised at number of people commenting on making life easier, espicially with bitches in season. am not a nurse so don't know about tumours, and how common they are.
confused.gif

our hounds don't seem to suffer this as a common problem and not all are bred from, so wondered if a certain bred itself can be more prone
confused.gif

At what age is the average Foxhound PTS? Perhaps they don't live long enough to be affected (I am assuming that this is a hunting pack, and thus are PTS once they can no longer keep up). Otherwise it may just be that that breed are less prone, I know ESS are particularly prone to mammary cancers.

My mums Staffy cross had just had one and she is only 5.

She is all better now so hopefully won't get any more!

She is not spayed at the moment but will be by the end of the week!

well we are a drag hound pack, that before we came 3 years ago, did not have a breeding programme. we only breed one litter a year because of space so we tend to hang on to our guys for as long as possible. at present our eldest bitch is 7

No offence taken......however I can be a little techy re-neutering
tongue.gif
it comes with the teritory....pyos and mammary tumours are not breed specific....can happen any breed, any age...but predominantley....the more seasons the bigger the risk....I see lots of elderly dogs dying or indeed living through a pyometra(infection of the womb) and either way its horrendous for the dog
frown.gif
who inevitabley has to be neutered in the process....so I would rather not take the chance when it comes to my own.

I rescue hundreds of dogs and see immense cruelty and ignorance in regard the k9 welfare....we neuter every single dog we re-home..our aim is to prevent them being breed from not for the convenience of the new owner.....we want to reduce not multiply.

Its all about personal experience...if u have not experienced a need to neuter your dogs,in regard to both rescue and health....then u wont feel the same need need I do.....the easiest way I can explain

hard to say, we have only been here 3 years and each pack has their own policies. 6+, but like i said each hunt is different, and each hound would be viewed depending on how much they had worked

That's interesting, I have always wondered at what age they were PTS (on average). Used to groom at a fox hunt kennels (pre-hunting ban), but never asked, but knew it was the norm for older, weaker, injured (depending on injury) to be PTS as weak pack members tended to be attacked or pushed out by the others.
