AGAGE
Well-Known Member
My 18 yo TB Ted, got very excited when in the ménage, this morning. The plan was to lunge him- glad I chose not to ride!. He hasn't been in there for a week or two due to the snow so was not surprised that he was on his toes.
On entering the ménage, he pulled the lead rope out of my hand and stormed off around the school! He is usually well mannered but it's what he did next that confused me.
I took off his lead rope. He charged at me , ears forward, reared, pirouetted, and then bucked at me- he wasn't close enough to hit me. At this point I exited the school quiet quickly. He then repeated all of this behaviour directed towards me at the fence. I walked up the side of the fence and he followed prancing around and squealing and bucking, striking his front leg out towards my direction, pawing the ground. His ears were forward throughout. The only time I have seen him do this is when playing with Toby in the field. I didn't feel threatened or scared as I was on other side of fence.
Eventually I put the lead rope on him and opened the gate he stormed off around the empty field and I caught him on the yard. Decided to give up on the lunge as had done plenty of unplanned exercise.
My initial thoughts were that Ted was trying to play with me, as if I were a horse, as this is what he does when I've seen him play with Toby. He was obviously very excited and seemed to buck towards me more when I just stood the other side of the fence watching him, when I shouted at him he pranced even more!
Has your horse done this with you before, I have never in 20 years of being around horses had one do this with me. Should I be concerned by his behaviour. He is usually very well mannered.
