My 18 yo TB Ted, got very excited when in the ménage, this morning. The plan was to lunge him- glad I chose not to ride!. He hasn't been in there for a week or two due to the snow so was not surprised that he was on his toes.

On entering the ménage, he pulled the lead rope out of my hand and stormed off around the school! He is usually well mannered but it's what he did next that confused me.

I took off his lead rope. He charged at me , ears forward, reared, pirouetted, and then bucked at me- he wasn't close enough to hit me. At this point I exited the school quiet quickly. He then repeated all of this behaviour directed towards me at the fence. I walked up the side of the fence and he followed prancing around and squealing and bucking, striking his front leg out towards my direction, pawing the ground. His ears were forward throughout. The only time I have seen him do this is when playing with Toby in the field. I didn't feel threatened or scared as I was on other side of fence.

Eventually I put the lead rope on him and opened the gate he stormed off around the empty field and I caught him on the yard. Decided to give up on the lunge as had done plenty of unplanned exercise.

My initial thoughts were that Ted was trying to play with me, as if I were a horse, as this is what he does when I've seen him play with Toby. He was obviously very excited and seemed to buck towards me more when I just stood the other side of the fence watching him, when I shouted at him he pranced even more!

Has your horse done this with you before, I have never in 20 years of being around horses had one do this with me. Should I be concerned by his behaviour. He is usually very well mannered.

Sounds to me like he is literally kicking up his heels. I also think you are right, he wanted you to play. If it had been viscious he could easily have got at you. Sounds like he was feeling really fresh, because of being stabled. We have had the same with Captain, baby rears and bucking around the arena, just 'cos he has not been able to get out for a week (sheet ice everywhere)

By the way, he is certainly doing well for 18yo!

Sounds to me like he is playing with you - I would put it down to no work + plenty of energy, I wouldn't worry too much at this time - will probably be a one off - Moses was like this when I was leading him out after being stuck in due to ice on yard, keep tabs on it and don't let it get out of hand, I.E I would have grabbed him after his hooley and worked him!!

He was playing and letting off steam after being in for that length of time...

When I used to lunge merls we would have a bit of fun afterwards...i'd let him off to run the school and i'd chase him and look at him and tell i was gonna get him bend half down he would stand there looking at me....run towards me ears forward too, get to me turn around at buck like a nutter then run off again to the other end stand at look at me as if to say yeah come one then.....lol it was funny we loved our play time..

Glad to hear he was probably trying to play with me! Although he really should know better, given his age.

He was like this all last week with the snow in the field, Toby who's 10 years younger than Ted couldn't care less about the snow but Ted was behaving like a youngster playing and eating the snow!

At least he's feeling well! Just, knowing my luck he'll injure himself in all of his excitement, like he did 5 years ago having too much fun, the week after he'd qualified for the regionals at novice level!

Sounds just like my snowy... though he has now taken to doing this occasionally when you turn out (well like 1/5 of the time now) the little bugger haha, yes i was told by some natural horsewoman that it was him playing, shame she didnt know how to bleeding stop him

!!

I agree with everyone else that he's playing

My horse does the same quite often hence why I think he needs another horsey companion

Its not really fun when he does this at full speed at me in the field, when i know he's soooooo clumsy!

He was probably looking forward for a bit of a play/ companionship so you were the nearest thing!

If he's been in for a while too he's probably desperate for a bit of interaction

I'd have run to the outside of the school though too!!
