In particular tendon/ligament/fracture etc

If so please could you explain what the injury was, how it was incurred (ridden, in field, competing etc) and what the level of fitness was at the time of injury? Oh and also what size, age and breed the horse in question was?

Thankies!!

My horse had a mild injury to her suspensory ligament on her left fore leg at the top where it inserts just below her knee. She just appeared slightly lame one day when I got on for schooling and was confirmed by ultrasound a week later. She had 1 month of box rest with limited in hand walking and was then scanned again to confirm it had healed. She then had walking only ridden exercise for 1 month and then a gradual increase over the next 2-3 months until she was back in full work.
She was in moderate work when the injury occured, ridden 5-7 times a week and competing dressage or show jumping most weekends.
She is a 16hh anglo arab x warmblood and was about 7 yrs old at the time.

1st injury -Mare was 11 got a kick in field which broke splint bone in off hind in 2 places, mare did have boots on at time vet says leg would have been shattered if no boots.Mare was back in full work by 6 months
2nd injury- occurred 6 months after 1st mare still 11 yrs old. Some twit put her in a field of unknown horses in error(had not been in field since broke splint bone) damaged near front tendon.usual cold hosing boxrest etc, after discussing with vet mare turned away for a year.Is now back in work and fighting fit.
Mare has had nearly 2 yrs off work,we only had her 3 months when she broke splint bone!!!!!!!

Lad damaged his check ligament in the field, was quite unusual as he had four small puncture wounds and also developed an infection. The vet was not sure whether it was ligament damage or an infection so was treated for both for the first 3 days was then taken and scanned, one ligament 2mm bigger than the other.

He was put on quiet paddock rest and walked in hand for 5mins to begin with building up by 10% every three days to a max of 20 mins a day, he also had Cartophen (sp) injections once a week for the first month and then once a month, think he had 7 in total. After three and a half months I was allowed to get back on and up the walking again by 10% every three days, after 4-5 weeks I was allowed to start trotting 4 mins at a time, again this was built up by 10% every three days, and just brought back into work from there.

He is 15.2 anglo arab he was 7 at the time.

My 10 year old 14hh dales x mare ruptured her digital extensor tendon in her off hind. She was out in the field, mid summer, very overweight. She had six months of box rest but came back 100%.
2 years later both front feet turned dramatically toe in (she'd always been slightly toe in). Vet diagnosed strain to the collateral ligaments (? problems started when first shod with natural balance shoes), remedial shoeing - lateral extensions and rest brought her sound.
In both instances she was in light - medium work.
She remained for another 18 months in very hard work, had the spring off but came back lame afterwards, she was PTS 6 months later for an unrelated condition.

My 16.1hh 3.5 year old TB went lame behind and in front. Hind leg put down to slight damage to digital extensor just above the hock, vet thought from kick although he'd never had an injury or heat or swelling (until vet did flexion), this inproved with rest and physio. He was out at grass and about to be backed when this happened.
He also has navicular and possibly bone spavin also.

my horse is a 15.1hh 21yr old Welsh Cob gelding. He got proximal suspensory desmitis in his right hind age 16. Was fully fit at the time - doing 2ft6 jumping classes, hacking and dressage to Elem. No idea if he did it in field/riding - just noticed gradual onset of stiffness after standing still and was crippled after flexion. Came back to full work after 6months and went on up to 3ft jumping and Medium dressage over next few yrs. Last yr at age 20 he damaged his annular ligaments in both his hindlimbs. Again not sure how/when. He went on sponsored ride and finished sound, then 2wks later went to dressage clinic and was lame. Hacked out sound for a week and then just in walk for a week due to a loose shoe so no idea exactly when he went lame. Ended up having surgery at Newmarket on both legs in August and is now in hacking work, still very slightly lame on one hindlimb, but not enough to worry about or stop him enjoying himself, so hoping to do some veteran showing this year - wont be doing any more jumping/dressage.

oh my god where to start. all injuries on my 15.1 now 16 yr old irish bred mare.

when competing at a local show (in an indoor school thats used for BSJA and BD) she tweeked her superficial flexor tendon in her near fore. she was given cortisone injections bute and physio 4 weeks box rest and then in hand walking which was built up to 3 x 30 mins a day and then back to riding. was given excerise regime from vet. she was fairly fit when this happened. it was 4 yrs ago tho, so will be honest and say she wasnt been ridden correctly over her back etc, i was only 17 and not very good at all that

18 months ago she was diagnosed with mild bone spavin in her near hind and the beginings of bone spavin in her off hind. more cortisone injections 2 weeks box rest on bute and then i was told to keep her moving as not to let her stiffen up. again lots of walking in hand (shes better in hand that being ridden) and after more physio (laser and ultrasound) started building her work up again. this time she was 14 and i was nearly 20 so had mastered a bit of that stressage and she was at her fittest up till then. she did return to full work after this. has since been kept on cosequine suppliment that i get from my vet.

more recently at the begining of may last year rearing to go after her spavin just started getting her out to shows, she got cast in her stable over night, must have got completly wedged and somehow in the struggle pactically taw her deep digital flexor in her near hind. prognosses wasnt to good and her hock was the size of an elephants it was huge. she had as much physio as we could thro at it more cortisone injections 6 weeks box rest and more bute. but what do you know my little horse pulled through although her hock hasnt got right down vets amazed at how much its gone down. he said she would always be unlevel behind but she isnt for some reason. shes now back in full work apart from the jumping. used to do a lot but vet says there will always be a weekness there so not to over do it 3 ft should be our limit but i dont care about that ive got my horse back. infact shes come back naughtier than ever! loves going for a run bucking jumping leaping and all the rest of it. although i miss the chance to take her to shows and things like that, i wouldnt part with her. think i am gonna do some farm rides this year for a bit of excitement. shes now fitter than shes ever been and at 16 i have to say looks fab shes enjoying life and is very happy and thats all that matters
