Has your horse had a steroid injection in the coffin joint?

As title really.

Long story, but will shorten it. Horse did n/f suspensory way back in June 2011, January 2012 he had PRP and then shortly afterwards had his hocks fused as he had spavin and this helped to prevent overloading on his forehand. He had LW ultrasound and pulsed mag therapy, and physio therapy too. Everything went really well for 18 months, the horse was brought back into work slowly and carefully and he went out competing, doing really well and getting placed nearly every time out in jumping comps - we got 16 1/2 double clears in 9 outings doing 2 classes a time between 2ft 9 - 3ft 3 height.

Then in June 2013 I got a call at work to say he'd got caught up in a wheelbarrow as his rug was being changed prior to turn out. He'd managed to stick his leg in the front of the wheelbarrow near the wheel and lug it half way round the yard banging into things and sending everything flying. Of course it had to be his damaged suspensory, which we'd took so long to heal at a cost of £4K which included all rehab physio, L/W ultra sound, shockwave, etc, etc. I know I was incredibly lucky at the time not to have him break his leg.

Sadly the leg is damaged beyond repair, and its now a case of managing it best I can. There is a fairly large calcification in the ligament as a result of the wheelbarrow incident which wasn't there previously on ultrasound. This is making him repeatedly lame everytime I even think about increasing the workload slightly and I have resigned myself to the fact that he will never go back jumping, or even dressaging. This rules out eventing, fun rides, just about everything that I am passionate about. I feel incredibly sad and bitter about the whole thing. Everyone says "never mind you have had nine good years from him" but its hardly the point. We could have had many more good times together. He can't have an operation to remove the calcification and shockwave or ultrasound would make no difference as it is too large.

I took him to the vets on the 14th March and he had loads of xrays and he was diagnosed 3/10ths lame which showed on a circle on the right rein. After a nerve block of the n/f foot he was diagnosed 1/10th lame, so on the 17th March had his coffin joint steroid injected as the vet thought the coffin joint was causing the most lameness. He thought the 1/10th lameness was caused by the suspensory.

Eight days later the horse is still lame. I rang my vet this morning and he said the steroid would still be working and to give him another fortnight.

How long did it take your horses to come sound after a coffin joint steroid injection? Did it really make a difference? Has anyone had a lateral branch suspensory injury and did your horse come sound?

Cookies and cream if you read it all xx
