my arab mare was one of a twin, both survived and both fillies.I know from the breeding side that most mares who are scanned in foal with twins often have one squeezed out. what are your views have you been in this situation before? do you have twins, photos would be great if you have any!!!!!!

i do a mare based down in cheshire/staffordshire will look for pics. Met the owner (dealer) who said there were few complications and now she has 3 stunning horses. all still alove and kicking

ah that is so sad i have heard that the mare can carry full term give birth and one normally passes away shortly after seems such a shame!

there was an article in H&H recently about an ID mare that unexpectedly had twins and both survived.

a lady near us put her horse in foal and it had twins, one was much smaller tho and didn't live very long (a week or so i think) but she still has mum and the other foal (now 10) who is beautiful and about to have her own baby.

how sweet are they!!!!!!!!!!! they are gorgeous i didnt realise just how rare it is for both to survive thanks for sharing this with us!

delphipuppy has a photo of twin foals born to a visiting mare to her stallion on her website but no feedback as to whether both survived in the end

Our neighbours mare had twins about 7 years ago, both survived. One had his picture in the paper competing at a local hunter trials. The mare had a history of twins but previously had aborted when they tried to remove one, so on this occasion they decided to just let nature take its course.

There was a Fell mare a few years agao that had twins - both survived and grew up healthy. I 'm pretty sure there was a photo of them in The Times when they were a few weeks old.

A Trakhener mare at a yard we were at had twin fillies, both of whom survived, although they were quite small, and the mare had been scanned as well! It was a real shock. Luckily the dam was a really chilled out mare.

Yes, my mare had twins about 3 years ago and sadly they both died within 3 hours. Nearly lost the mare too just before they were hand-delivered by my vet.

A stud I was working at had twin fillies born to a near TB mare and by Dutch Courage.
The stud owner's daughter squealed with delight ather joy of having TWO babies and the stud owner and I just looked at each other with a look of 'shall you tell her or shall I?'!

The black filly was very 'runty' and had severe limb deformities. They did their best for her but she was put to sleep after several months I believe.
The chestnut, turned grey, had slight twisting of the front limbs but after an op at Greenwodd Ellis' in Newmarket, went on to be broken and turned into a useful riding horse. Unfortunately she died young, about six or seven, due to colic.
I think she had been prone to it and I wonder whether that was as a result of being a twin or purely coincidental.

arrrh bless them thanks for the picture what a shame though. it is interesting what you have just spoken about .i tried to get my mare in foal unfortunately she didnt concieve and then when i told the vet she was one of a twin he explained that this was possibly why she didnt take, apparently it can sometimes effect their fertility.?!

Shadow was stabled initially at a Welsh Cob stud- they had had a mare who had made it into H&H because she was the first registered/reported cob to have given birth to twins who both survived.

a mare in the yard i am in had twins. one was alot smaller then the other.
After about 2 weeks the smaller mare died. Other one is doing fine last i heard, he is now a yearling.
