Ok so I admit, I don't always wear a hat. Gloves, on the other hand, are useful.

but I was walking past our jump paddock yesterday and there were two young girls (about 8 or 9) with a pony on the lunge - no hats, no gloves, no clue.

Ponio kept turning in on them, when it wasn't bucking.

Mum was nearby talking to YO and neither of them batting an eyelid. When I mentioned to her that her daughter could get kicked or a rope burn she just said 'oh I didn't realise'

I'm not getting on my high horse here (ok, maybe I am) but I think lungeing is an art - as is free schooling. Makes my blood boil on our yard when kids are just chasing their ponios around with lunge whips. Some people just seem to think that they can lunge any old how - even those who can't ride.... (after all it's just a pony on a rope going in circles - how hard can it be?)

I know people have to learn somewhere but this is getting silly....

a few years ago at my old yard i saw a young girl (10-11) lunging with the rope wrapped round her fingers, it was a windy day - the horse reared and it took the tops of her fingers off as he went up... finger tip hunting really isnt much fun!

id have a word with the YO to speak to the mum and say they are not to do it without that gear. Good luck

I had a horse on a lunge line taking her to the field once, I had the lungeline looped in the normal way, when through the gate this horse took off taking the lunge line with her. The end of the line managed to tie a knot round my finger..... I still have that finger as i WAS wearing gloves...... the force still broke it, but Always wear gloves if using a lungeline now!!

I hear you. I always wear gloves when lunging. I am often tempted to leave my hat off with my mare because we know each other so well and she is usually very sensible. However, when she has been spooked whilst on the lunge, she can fling herself around in an impressive way and she is a big, powerful mare, so I make myself wear it (even though it must be two years since the last flinging session)! I think I may have left it off once - my brain is my favourite organ!

I'm not into dictating to other adults about wearing hats - each to their own, but children by their nature are not making an informed decision. The relevant adults really should insist IMO.

Its like you say - everyone is different - anything could trigger any horse/pony to go mad... and im a firm believer that no horse is 100% bombproof.

I never wear hat/gloves.. but thats the risk i run.

Enjoy gesturing with your fingers while you still have them.

i generally wear gloves but dont bother with a hat unless i lunging something i dont know or a nutter.

personally i think there are many skills that are simply not being taught to the younger generation of horse owner/riders, its a crying shame, and dangerous.
but then i think that lots of kids arnt taught to clean tack properly, groom properly etc - how many kids on yards nowadays can properly strap up a pony?
lunging is another on a long list of un-taught skills

IMHO

Good for you! Keep playing your part to stem global warming by reducing over-population.

I have to say, for adults it's their own decison (I'd never tell anyone over 18 to wear a hat) if fingers are lost then so be it!

I just think kids should be made to - especially those under 10 who aren't competant.

I think in some respects a lunge lesson is as important as a riding lesson.

Well you'll be alright til you've lost a few more...and you might want to practice ambidextrous nose-picking in preparation.

I think youre right about the kids - but surely their parents should have some kind of feelings towards them being seriously injured. If not then its their own fault if something happens to them - oh no itll be the ponies fault and sold!

probably not

Sounds like you don't have much to lose...and if you get smacked you can always pretend you don't recognise your OH and irritating family and start a new life in Brazil.

If you dress yourself and your pony in tassels and sequins I'm sure you could charge business men by the hour.

I ALWAYS wear gloves for lunging. This was a lesson learnt from experience!! Antifaz and PF have both given me nasty rope burns (my lunge line isn't one of those lovely soft ones!) on my hands. I never wear a hat though I've had a few close encounters with their hooves when they've been really, really fresh
