Hi, have seen a hat i want to order, my friend has one and its a lovely fit. It Meets the Standard CE-EN 1384. Its from europe, is this still very safe? I have a newly backed welsh D so need my head safe - wanted to have it for an everyday hat, its a vented design and has the washable inner.
Thanks

I was told by one hat fitter to never wear anything less than a hat at PAS015 standard if hacking out and doing road work as some of the other standards aren't as robust - I was trying on lots of different hats (I do showing and dressage have never owned a skull cap in my life) which i felt were show ring appropriate but given I ride 90% of my time out on hacks involving lots of road work...I am now the proud owner of a skull cap with silk!
My friend who was with me made a valid comment - it's the only head I have!

ETA just found this on BHS site which is helpful http://www.bhs.org.uk/~/media/BHS/Files/PDF%20Documents/Safety%20leaflets/BETA%20Guide%20to%20Riding%20Hats.ashx

Yeah i thought someone may say this, just wanted to make sure! your right - you only get one head!
I do have a caldene velvet one for showing and currently a charles owen for everyday which needs replacing. Have thought about a HS1

Personally as a medic dealing with equine accidents for a living I always have the highest standard which is 'snell' next is PAS015 uk or ASTM (US).
The on you Mention is lowest standard.

Okay another trip to countrywide tomorrow then! alot of others i have been looking at are the PAS015
The vented one is now no longer an option!

One of my RC has started hat tagging and some 'new' hats bought off the internet (some were ebay) were discovered to be fake. Make sure you buy your hat from reputable sources.

Buyer beware!

There's a new Gatehouse ventilated skull, the RXC1.

Approved to BSEN1384, PAS015, and Snell E2001. I am going to investigate it, I have a Gatehouse shaped head and its about time that I retired my HS1.

Thats a great hat which seemed to fit me well, have got 1 put aside for me to collect this Thursday.
Not cheap tho as they are around £170ish

There is no difference between PAS 015 & EN1384 - both standards are approved for XC riding - http://www.beta-uk.org/media/safety/download/Riders - safety - hat standards.pdf.

Check the link to the BHS page that Exmoorponyprincess has provided above as it will give you additional information regarding Kitemarks / SEI marks etc. The CE mark that you mention would not pass muster if it was inspected by BRC / PC or BE, & you wouldn't be able to ride in it at any event where hats were being checked & tagged.

The different standards test different things. IIRC one focuses on preventing crush injuries, one tests thoroughly to reduce penetration and ones not interested in that at all, but focuses on which parts of the brain are protected.

This is not true. Just because they accept different standards doesn't mean they are the same

It's my understanding that the higher standards would/do pass the lower standards plus the other not instead of
