I only have a Gatehouse Conquest matt black hat and unfortunately it has a peak so I can't put a velvet silk over it. Will this be acceptable out autumn hunting/hunting proper or will I secretly be looked at as dressing inappropriately?

There seems to be a myth that if newcomers are not dressed in the whole traditional hunting kit, that they'll be patronised, laughed at or sent home. Everyone is welcome if clean, tidy, well presented and having made an effort to conform.
If you get hooked, then you can live on eBay and buy good hunting kit instead -if you hate it (and apparently some people do lol!) then you haven't wasted any money
