hates his ears being touched

My boy has aural plaques and I'm not sure whether its a result of these but he hates his ears being touched. Has anyone got any tips for helping him get over this. Even trying to touch them when his head is in a feed bucket doesn't distract him! :(
 
Mine hates her ears being touched too. Unless someone managed to grab her in a field as a youngster, which is unlikely, she's never been ear twitched, neither is she nervous about them. Just plain doesn't like it. She is now fine to have them being touched & is fine to have them clipped, a child can groom them or tack up etc but its tolerance, after 20 yrs she still doesn't enjoy it. Start by handling round his poll & the base of them, always stopping before he moves. Gradually work your way up to grooming & touching them but do it slowly. Might also be worth ruling pain out if he's a new horse or its a new habit.
 
Mine was like this, went ballistic when we tried to clip even near them, out of character for him though as he wasn't a headshy horse, turned out he had a sore poll! Poor boy! Worth getting that checked out.
 
he did have a very sore poll when I got him as had been side reined to death and was very sore through his neck and one side of his body generally has all been fixed now but guess his not going to forget in a hurry just guess its a time thing! :)
